What I have been doing with my time.

Monday, October 20, 2014

Since hurting my knee on the 3rd I haven't been able to exercise and go, go, go like normal. I've had to rest my leg. Which can be very boring. So to keep from going crazy and out of boredom I learned to crochet Granny Squares and just completed my first afghan using them. I admit more than once when I couldn't sleep because of pain I came downstairs at 2 am, reviewed my work and undid some squares and when I started putting them together undid half of a row. I watched countless videos and looked at lots of pictures until I got it mostly right.

This is the finished project:

Now I'm going to finish an apron I'm crocheting and another crocheting project. After I finish them I'm starting on another afghan using different stitches. Should be fun. Have 5 more weeks in the knee brace.

Have a great day!

What a spectacular job! How beautiful! I'm sorry it took such a serious injury to get you to invest the time it took to make such a nice afghan.
Thanks for sharing the picture!

Just a short post. On Oct 3 I went down the stairs knee first. As I laid at the bottom of the stairs the first thing that came to mind was thank goodness I didn't break my arm again. The second thought was thank goodness no one saw me. I am and have always been a graceless. Not the first time to fall down stairs. I fell down first thing in the morning. I waited until after lunch to see how my knee felt. It didn't get better so I drove myself to the ER. After a lot of poking and xrays they said it was a sprain, gave me a knee brace so I wouldn't bend it and crutches with orders to rest it. And I have, I have almost completed all of a granny square afghan. The crutches went first. I can't use them at home, not enough room and can't grocery shop with them. Thursday, the 9th I went to the doctor. After much pain and more xrays he said I tore something and needed a MRI. Not what I wanted to hear. This past weekend was parent's weekend at the Naval Academy for some of the mids. I am a sponsor Mom and I wanted to be there. I knew there would be a lot of walking, I thought about using my crutches. Thank goodness I didn't, they would have ended up in the bay. My knee brace about ended up in the trees. I had to rest all weekend. Yesterday I had the MRI and Thursday I see the doctor again. I can walk without the brace but am still having problems with bending my knee.

So that is what is going on with me.

Have a great day!

Another month has bit the dust. September is looking like it is going to be busy. Sunday my dd moved out. Now I need to clean and organize her bedroom. We are hoping to hear about a move in the near future so I need to get the whole apartment organized. I thought I wouldn't be babysitting this week but it looks like I will be babysitting after school. I can get a lot done before them.

My goals for September are:
lose 5.25 lbs
Meet my step goal of 360000 steps
Strength train 6x a week
Stretch daily
Declutter apartment
Log food and exercise daily

Well, I'm off to start my day. Have a wonderful Tuesday!

Progress or lack of

Monday, July 21, 2014

Has there been progress? Not in the weight loss side. But on the health side there has been a tremendous amount of progress. I went from playing in the snow.
To bedridden on March 5 with tubes coming out of me from places I don't even want to think about.
To walking the hospital floor with a few less tubes and a walker.
To hiking 9 miles in the mountains on a hard trail.
I think that is a lot of progress in 4 months. There are still things I can't do. I can't do things that put pressure on my breast plate - the area they cracked me open. This includes push ups, triceps dips, planks and a lot of yoga poses. It takes time to heal from heart surgery. It is hard not to be impatient, I want to be healed now. My patience is wearing thin at times. But on those days when I am feeling low because of lack of progress I look back at how far I have come since March 5. Heck, I'm still alive, that is a big thing. I know the weight will come off, it is just hard when it comes off in ounces instead of pounds. I know I will meet my goals I just have to be patient.

Today was a good day until my treadmill broke, I guess I will have to start going to the gym again to use their treadmill emoticon It is hot and stinky in there. emoticon I've started back to Turbo Jam, still walking outside when the weather agrees with me. I don't handle the hot and humid like I use to.

I'm going to walking in place while watching baseball.

Have a great evening!

I'm so happy for you! The weight will come off as you progress. Be as gentle with yourself as you would a child you dearly love... you deserve to be handled with care. emoticon I'm recovering from rotator cuff surgery and was just told by my doc yesterday to stop doing things, like swimming (my favorite!). I might tear his good work and require more invasive stitches. emoticon
When I saw your blog, I realized how much we demand of ourselves. We put pressure on ourselves to attain huge strides we wouldn't ask of others. You look great and are out there! That's what counts... Blessings, Joy emoticon emoticon

If you have a mall near by, try walking there. Generally malls will open early in the morning just so that people can walk, especially seniors, when it gets too hot.

Even during the day some times with shoppers around, I try to do at least two loops. The mall where I live is fairly large and at least it is out of the sun and a bit cooler too.

Thank you and other stuff

Friday, April 25, 2014

First, the thank you is long overdue. I want to Thank everyone for the support, prayers and goodies during my surgery and recovering. It was a lot of help mentally. To know that people where thinking of me when I couldn't do anything but lay there in bed helped keep me sane. I am not a very restful person, I like to get up and go. Being forced to stay in bed was hard. Being hooked up to all those tubes and wires was harder. I am recovering nicely now, I can get up and go as I please, exercise and such within reason. No lifting. That means the family carries the groceries and bottle water in. Can't lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk. That also means no carrying the laundry basket and vacuum cleaner up and down the stairs. That is what family is for.

I've started cardiac rehab and it is going well. I am progressing well. It is an interesting mix of people there. There are those who understand the importance of exercise in recovery and prevention of future heart problems. Then there are those who are only there because the doctor told them they can't go back to work until they complete rehab. They don't want to be there and put no effort into it. Those are the ones that drive the nurses insane. If I hear it is a treadmill and not a lawn mower many more times I may snap. But honestly, I enjoy my time there.

Have a great day!

I think anything that is out of our normal routine is hard to get used to. But it sounds are you are handling everything very well -- and it's great news that you are able to come and go as you please.

Be thankful you have family to carry the groceries and vacuum cleaner. Time passes so quickly, soon you'll be on your own again.
