Shaping Up in ' 12

Wow, it's been years since I've posted a blog entry on here...YEARS! Wow :) Spark People has always been such a great site, and it's awesome looking back at my journey on here!

I am back on here to basically shape up and prepare myself for two big events I have planned this year: The American Lung Association's Fight For Air Climb on March 10th and the Ride for Roswell race on June 23rd.

I completed the Fight For Air Climb event last year with very little training (you climb 800 steps). I was the top individual fundraiser and I am looking to be crowned the top fundraiser this year too. I would like to get my time down (took me 8:48 last year) to under 8 minutes. I know I can do it, I just need to train properly and get my body conditioned the right away. Which means lots of stair climbing and lots of lower body strength training.

The Ride for Roswell is going to be my big challenge this year. I don't ride bikes normally and haven't for YEARS. As soon as my stair climb event is over I will begin training for the Ride for Roswell in June.

Would love to tone up the body and lose a few lbs. too! But the main goal is to get in the RIGHT shape to complete these events and be successful in them.

Healthier Holidays - Days 5, 6, 7, 8

December 5th
Try healthier recipes. When treats are in the house, more of the dessert usually ends up in your belly than in your guests. So keep some low fat, low-calorie recipes and foods on hand.

I am trying to get rid of leftovers as quickly as possible and having snacks on hand to eat instead.

December 6th
Focus on people. Too often, food takes center stage of our holiday gatherings. Instead, focus on your loved ones, activities, and other traditions that make the holidays meaningful.

I'll definitely be focusing on the people this holiday season :-) :-) I can't wait to start having holiday parties at our house!!

December 7th
Budget wisely. Watch your food intake during the day if you're going to a party that night. Make healthy, filling choices beforehand, budgeting a few more calories to account for the party fare.

I am planning my meals ahead of time and really working hard on getting things situated so that I can indulge but still stay within my calorie range.

December 8th
Stay organized. Keep a running list of errands, groceries, and gifts, and make a plan to finish as
many things in as few trips as possible. You'll save time, gas and your own sanity!

I always stay organized so this one is easy for me. I do have a list together of what I will need for the holidays (cooking wise) so that will be easy once it comes to shop for those parties!

But as for leftovers... I love them and use them for lunches! I hate cooking more often then I have to!

The Holidays :-)

The holidays are my favorite time of the year. I love Christmas, I love everything surrounding Christmas and it feels extra special this year because we have our own house to celebrate it in!

For me the holidays are mostly about family. I love getting to spend time with my family and friends and just have a good time. The year is filled with so many busy days, that this time is great to just sit back and relax with the people you really love.

Over the holidays I'll be having a lot of parties at our house and I am so excited to have them all. There's not really one person or group of people I'm more excited to spend time with, I am just stoked in general!!! I'll spend quality time with all my brothers/sisters, my family, my friends and my hubby and his family! It is going to be a great finish to a great year :-)

I have so much to be thankful for and I am so glad I get to thank some of the people who helped make my year great through the holidays :-)

Healthier Holidays - Days 3 & 4

Today's calendar tip is to decide which holiday parties are worth it to really splurge and which ones are not...

For me it's definitely December 24 & 25 - our big Christmas Eve and Christmas Day parties...those are the two I am not going to worry about calories, BUT make sure I get in great workouts surrounding those days. The other days, I am going to do my best to stay within my calorie range!!!

As for December 4th - it says to simplify your gifts for others, just pick one name out of a hat or donate money to charities....

I am doing a lot of those things - I picked a few names off a Giving Tree at the School I work for, and I just bought gifts for them - my hubby and I decided not to do gifts this year because we have our house to buy for. Then my friends and I are doing something different this year, just getting one gift - my brothers and sisters are doing the same, and in my family we are just buying for a few people this year...

I think it will work out well :-)

I love these tips, they make me think and keep me on my toes!

    I really love giving presents out at Christmas time. More even than I like getting them. I plan to do Toys for Tots and give to the local food bank since with the downturn in the economy there is a lot more need and less people giving. I'm not sure where I would find a Giving Tree, we used to do that when I was younger.

I wish my families were as cool about not doing presents as you ladies are.

Matt & I aren't doing presents either, and I've talked with my parents & we decided that happiness is enough for us this year.

31 Days to Healthier Holidays!!

One of the other ladies on my B2B Challenges team did this, and I think it's awesome, so I'm going to do it too!!! (Thanks KASSI!)

Day 1:
Take inventory.
Identify all the situations (office parties, mall food courts, family gatherings) that make
it difficult for you to eat healthy during the holiday season. Make a plan for staying on track in every situation.

My inventory:
December 13th - Having a family get together at my house
- Having cold cut platters, salads, etc....I will try to cut back on rolls, eat lighter, etc...
December 18th - Dinner with my brothers/sisters then back to our house
-Eat lighter throughout the day so I can splurge a little at dinner
December 20th - Friends party
-Try to decide on a little healthier dinner, go light on desserts
December 24th - Christmas Eve at our house
-Allow yourself to splurge here (but in moderation)
December 25th - Christmas Day at my Mom's
-Allow yourself to splurge here (but in moderation)
December 28th - Bills final game of the season (tailgating)
-This is a cheat day
December 31st - New Year's Eve party
-Eat light all day, try to lay off the alcohol

Day Two: Stay Active
Donít mistake being "busy" for being "active." You still need to exercise at least 30 minutes each day. Break it up into a few smaller sessions throughout the day if you're pressed for time.

**SO IMPORTANT! I am going to strive to get 30 minutes of exercise every day this month to help balance out the extra holiday calories!!!
