BEST I'VE EVER BEEN! DAY 81

YOU CAN'T LOSE WEIGHT AND KEEP IT OFF WITHOUT CHANGING YOURSELF!

I had my physical yesterday and my total cholesterol was 190! Doc says it is the best I've ever been! Blood pressure was 126 over 84 which is normal for me and he was pleased I was losing weight. I told him about Spark and he was going to look into it. So that was good.

I met my running class last night and hubby went with me. I still don't like the running part but I'm giving it a shot. Taking today off as my legs hurt from toe to hip. Haven't used those muscles in a while. So I've walked/run 7 miles in 4 days.

Today started out with a lot of stress and I missed a meeting that was yesterday. Had it on for today all along. ? At times like that I just want ice cream or a sausage biscuit but I got coffee instead. until tomorrow. Happy St. Pat's.

Bubble bath. Favorite album. Two chapters of a good book. Call a friend and chat. Email a Sparker.

The coffee works, too. You need an emergency plan: 'When I start stressing, I will ______ to help me feel better and calm down.' Sort of like an emergency kit. :-D

Come to think of it, I will go work on an emergency kit for myself. What can I do instead of reaching for that ice cream--?

Give your muscles a chance to get used to running before you really make a decision. I've found that I hate the idea of running, but I actually enjoy the run when I do it. I can talk myself out of it so easy, but once I actually run I'm glad I did.

AROUND THE SPARK IN 80 DAYS! DAY 80

YOU CAN'T LOSE WEIGHT AND KEEP IT OFF WITHOUT CHANGING YOURSELF!

Today is my long awaited appointment with my doctor for my physical. Of course I'll have to weigh in but expect it to be higher than my scale at home. I get to see the reports from my blood tests. It will be interesting to see how my readings fare. I have a couple of issues to talk with him about like CC and a dry cough. He is an exercise and healthy eating nut and I've probably been a nuisance to him all these years. I'm not sick very often so I haven't seen him in quite a while.

Last night I did my second run/walk mile, working towards that 5K. Coach Haralson said some of it wouldn't be fun and the running part is not fun yet. My thighs ache. Interesting. Tonight we have a group run/walk and hubby will go and run in the opposite direction. In between I have a luncheon and 2 appmts. A busy day.

It is amazing that I have been here faithfully for 80 days! Wow! I have finally committed to a change in lifestyle and I don't think I would have done it wihout the help of all my Spark friends and so much information. Think about it. On other diet plans, it is mostly up to you to stay motivated. You go into weigh and get a sad face from the instructor if you've been bad. With Spark, you get encouragement and find others in similr situations to help you get back on track. I love writing a blog. I can address my concerns and get them out of my system. Until tomorrow!

Congratulations on Day 80! Makes me think of "Around the World in 80 Days."

How did things go at the doctor's office? I'm guessing he found improvement and a "new you!"

Happy running!

Wowza - love the faithfulness! 80 days - excellent milestone! Great idea if I may borrow it: mark my calendar for 80 days from today - fun! Thanks for sharing!

RUN UNIVERSITY, WK1. DAY 79

YOU CAN'T LOSE WEIGHT AND KEEP IT OFF WITHOUT CHANGING YOURSELF!

Last night at 4:00 I started training for a 5K. I have always hated running but here I am in a class of running for dummies. There is a new store in our downtown called RUN WITH IT! They specialize in athletic wear and fitting shoes to people who run or walk. I read in the paper last week about a Running 101 program being taught by Danny Haralson, a Certified Coach of Road Runner's Clubs of AMerica. So I decided to give it a go.

When I say I hate running, that is no joke. My husband has been a runner for 45 years. He will go out on the hottest day in the year and run five miles and think it is just wonderful. He ran his first full marathon 2 years ago in Disney. He has tried to push and pull me into running all my life but it never worked. I tried and gave up many times. About 4 years ago, I met my friend Pat, and Pat taught me how to walk. She dragged me out at 6:30 2 days a week and walked slowly with me until I caught on. Now we can go 3 or 4 miles or more at a good pace and carry on a conversation. I owe a lot to her. I enjoy walking. So maybe I am ready for the next thing. I guess so because I am really excited about the prospect.

There are about 20 people in the class, all ages and shapes and I am by no means the least shapely. Danny told us that he was the founder of the Couch25K program. There are others who take credit for that too but I'll believe him for now. We started out with a mile walk/run. Walk 1/4 mile and then run back 4 times. I stayed with a woman who was a little slower than me, imagine that. Someone was actually slower and I stayed with her so she wouldn't feel like she was last. I was always last and therefore, never liked sports at all. Never got good at anything.

Our assignment this week is to go out and walk/run at least 5 times. So tonight, I will go out with my hubby. He is excited for me as this is my idea! Tuesday night is a group run at 6:00. The shop owner said there are many others who come out to run on Tuesday nights and they always have beer later. So, this is something hubby and I can do together. I'll go in one direction with the slow pokes and he can go in the other direction with the fast folks and we will meet in the middle. And enjoy our beer.

Oh, and I weighed this morning and lost another pound!

SPRING FORWARD FOR HEALTH! DAY 78

Sunday, March 14, 2010

YOU CAN'T LOSE WEIGHT AND KEEP IT OFF WITHOUT CHANGING YOURSELF!

For those of you who have a hard time remembering which way to turn the clocks, it is spring forward and fall back. So today is the day I start springing forward into fitness. I'm looking forward to the running class I am attending at 4:00. Should be interesting. I like the extra hour of daylight as I can walk later in the day and it isn't cold and dark yet. I live in the Florida panhandle, the part of Florida that is in Central Time! Yes, there is a little part east of Tallahassee that is in Central time and I love it. We get to go to bed at 10:00 instead of 11:00. Everything is an hour earlier. The draw back is that it gets dark an hour earlier too.

I can get real imaginative when it comes to cooking leftovers and we had leftovers in the fridge yesterday. I had some sloppy joes. Do you know there are only 50 calories in a serving of sloppy joe mix? You know the canned variety that you mix with ground beef and serve on a bun? Anyway, I had some left over. I also had some cabbage so I chopped it into big squares, and added a chopped onion and garlic and stir-fried in olive oil. When nearly cooked, I moved it to one side and then added the sloppy joes to heat up. We ended up mixing it all together and half went to hubby and half to me. It was really good.
I love the nutrition counter because I have found lots of food that I considered "fattening" to be low in calories. Who knew!

After dinner, we had some ripening bananas and I got out a British cookbook I had from when we lived there and found a recipe for Bananas flambé. It was delicious and relatively low in calories as well and a fruit!

2 bananas, sliced in half lengthwise
1 to 2 T of melted butter
1 T confectioners sugar
1 to 2 T liqueur ( had coffee liqueur)
Cook bananas in butter until starting to brown, not too long. Sprinkle with sugar and liqueur and light with match!
When flame is gone, serve.
Serves 2.

It's now 9:00 a.m. my time and time for me to get ready to go to church! Until tomorrow!

FITNESS STARTS NOW! DAY 77

Saturday, March 13, 2010

YOU CAN'T LOSE WEIGHT AND KEEP IT OFF WITHOUT CHANGING YOURSELF!

Okay, I've been putting off any kind of fitness and I've reached the day of no return. As we spring forward in our clocks tonight, I will have another hour of daylight which will help me get out later and take the dog or whatever. This morning I walked 4 miles with my friend Pat and I was able to talk and breathe at the same time. Imagine it. Kaseycoff had given me a green tea goodie so I am sipping my green tea with a little honey as I write.

Tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 I take the plunge, the path less traveled by me. I am joining a beginning runner's class. Me at almost 62. I absolutely hate running but Pat has taught me that I can walk long distances so now this opportunity has arisen for me to learn to run. There is a new store in our downtown that is called Run With It! and they specialize in fitting shoes and athletic wear to you. They are bringing in a certified running coach whose class is designed for that new to running person who's interested in covering the distance. For 7 weeks I will commit to their program which culminates in a 5K run on May 1. So I am going to do this. It should be interesting.

I am at the point in my program where I would normally give up. I would start cheating on food because I've lost a few pounds and the little piece of candy or whatever would not matter. So I really have to keep a handle on myself to stay in control. With the help of all of my Spark Friends, I can do this! So, on to my new adventure. I'll keep you posted.
