A MILESTONE BIRTHDAY! DAY 83

Friday, March 19, 2010

YOU CAN'T LOSE WEIGHT AND KEEP IT OFF WITHOUT CHANGING YOURSELF!

Today is a milestone birthday for me! I'm 62, eligible for social security. I'm applying for my check now, while there is still money left in the coffers. My only request is dinner out and to see my grandchildren sometime this weekend. It's a beautiful sunny day in Florida!

I've just been reading some notes and comments from my Spark friends and I just wanted to say thank you. It is so nice to have supportive friends on this site who have the same faults and challenges and aren't afraid to step up to the plate and help someone else. Kudos to all of you!

I think I'll just take a break from blogging today and just enjoy myself! Tomorrow!

St. PATRICK'S PIG OUT! DAY 82

Thursday, March 18, 2010

YOU CAN'T LOSE WEIGHT AND KEEP IT OFF WITHOUT CHANGING YOURSELF!

Last night we attended a St. Patrick's Day Party and everyone was supposed to bring something. We brought green plastic cups but the rest of the food was delicious and varied. This is the first time in 82 days that I pigged out and had whatever I wanted including green beer and cookies. Had a stressful day and I didn't even go near my nutrition tracker. I even had a shake and a sandwich before I went but there was homemade lumpia and eggrolls, fresh fried, spinach dip, assorted dips, wings, etc. etc. And it was so good and this is really hubby's Rotary event and his buddies and some of the wives kind of ignore me so I just ate and mingled. I had 3 big soft sugar cookies with green and white icing and they were so good! But I didn't eat a brownie or a piece of cake or any other dessert, just the cookies which I covet. Anyway, I don't even feel bad and today is a new day with a fresh start and I had oatmeal.

You know what, it's okay. I can pig out once every 82 days as long as I go back to the healthy eating mode the next day. Which I am doing. Another thing I discovered, I had a tsp of brown sugar on my oatmeal this morning and it only added 11 calories but it was a natural food. Why eat one of those skinny packets when you can have 11 calories of real brown sugar? I think that is a problem with american food manufacturers. THey invented all of this no fat, low fat, calorie free food which makes us think we can eat more. Back in the 60's everyone was into saccharin. Were people fat and obese before that? Can you think of how many of your friends were overweight? I was a big girl but I wasn't fat. At 16 I lost 20 pounds to become 130 and I was really thin. But I was still bigger than all my friends, taller and a bigger frame so I could never be a size anything less than a 10.

Back to Rotary, hubby has been a member for 20 years and there are many other men and their wives who have been participating all that time as well. There is a certain group of women who kind of just ignore me. Of course I own a business and I am a famous interior decorator around here, been published, etc. but I am a quiet kind of shy person myself. I might as well be a fly on the wall to some of these women. Anyway, I always make a point to welcome new people, especially the wives, because I know what it is like to feel out of place. It's just kind of silly. Hubby thinks they are all insecure as well and just stick together. Probably true.

Yes, I have been published, in fact I even had a bathroom published on the front cover of a WIndow Fashions Magazine! Right now, you can read about my military experience if you go to www.emeraldladiesjournal.com and I'm on page 39. Proud of it. Tomorrow.

You are absolutely right - you certainly ARE allowed to pig out occasionally, and if you do only once every 82 days, that's not even 5 times per year. All things in moderation - including depriving yourself. So enjoy the occasional 'pigout' guiltfree! :-D

I really enjoyed learning more about you in the article. You are an amazing woman, with lots of interesting stories and incredible talant. Too bad the other folks at the event can't see what I do.

I'm glad you ate what you liked, instead of eating out of stress. I sure love lumpia, but can't find it here in Texas!

I agree with you on the fake sweetners. I am switching from stevia to sugar.

You comment about the food manufactures inventing no fat, low-fat, calorie free food so that we think we can eat more should be more like "they invented it SO WE WILL EAT MORE". I remember reading an article several years ago about how the marketing for the food industry determines what product(s) will be the focus for the upcoming year. Ever notice how one year we hear and read about the benefit of blueberries, then its coconut oil is the greatest thing, etc.? And with each announcement there are products to go along with the so-called miracle ingredient.

Good blog. I am glad you enjoyed your cookies and don't feel bad about it. I, too, have been enjoy some foods that I know are not the best for me - I hope I can be like you and get back on track soon.

I agree with you about the pig out day! I know you had a good time and hope you are on track again today! When I was in school my Anatomy and Physiology professor gave us an article or paper he wrote about the different sugar substitutions. He was total against them and what they did to your health. The article or paper was at least 10 pages long and two pages of it was about disease and problems that they can cause with your health. It was something I could not believe! I try to avoid them as much as possible even being diabetic I try to stick to my water. No sodas with the stuff in them. emoticon emoticon emoticon

BEST I'VE EVER BEEN! DAY 81

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

YOU CAN'T LOSE WEIGHT AND KEEP IT OFF WITHOUT CHANGING YOURSELF!

I had my physical yesterday and my total cholesterol was 190! Doc says it is the best I've ever been! Blood pressure was 126 over 84 which is normal for me and he was pleased I was losing weight. I told him about Spark and he was going to look into it. So that was good.

I met my running class last night and hubby went with me. I still don't like the running part but I'm giving it a shot. Taking today off as my legs hurt from toe to hip. Haven't used those muscles in a while. So I've walked/run 7 miles in 4 days.

Today started out with a lot of stress and I missed a meeting that was yesterday. Had it on for today all along. ? At times like that I just want ice cream or a sausage biscuit but I got coffee instead. until tomorrow. Happy St. Pat's.

Bubble bath. Favorite album. Two chapters of a good book. Call a friend and chat. Email a Sparker.

The coffee works, too. You need an emergency plan: 'When I start stressing, I will ______ to help me feel better and calm down.' Sort of like an emergency kit. :-D

Come to think of it, I will go work on an emergency kit for myself. What can I do instead of reaching for that ice cream--?

Give your muscles a chance to get used to running before you really make a decision. I've found that I hate the idea of running, but I actually enjoy the run when I do it. I can talk myself out of it so easy, but once I actually run I'm glad I did.

AROUND THE SPARK IN 80 DAYS! DAY 80

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

YOU CAN'T LOSE WEIGHT AND KEEP IT OFF WITHOUT CHANGING YOURSELF!

Today is my long awaited appointment with my doctor for my physical. Of course I'll have to weigh in but expect it to be higher than my scale at home. I get to see the reports from my blood tests. It will be interesting to see how my readings fare. I have a couple of issues to talk with him about like CC and a dry cough. He is an exercise and healthy eating nut and I've probably been a nuisance to him all these years. I'm not sick very often so I haven't seen him in quite a while.

Last night I did my second run/walk mile, working towards that 5K. Coach Haralson said some of it wouldn't be fun and the running part is not fun yet. My thighs ache. Interesting. Tonight we have a group run/walk and hubby will go and run in the opposite direction. In between I have a luncheon and 2 appmts. A busy day.

It is amazing that I have been here faithfully for 80 days! Wow! I have finally committed to a change in lifestyle and I don't think I would have done it wihout the help of all my Spark friends and so much information. Think about it. On other diet plans, it is mostly up to you to stay motivated. You go into weigh and get a sad face from the instructor if you've been bad. With Spark, you get encouragement and find others in similr situations to help you get back on track. I love writing a blog. I can address my concerns and get them out of my system. Until tomorrow!

How did things go at the doctor's office? I'm guessing he found improvement and a "new you!"

Happy running!

RUN UNIVERSITY, WK1. DAY 79

YOU CAN'T LOSE WEIGHT AND KEEP IT OFF WITHOUT CHANGING YOURSELF!

Last night at 4:00 I started training for a 5K. I have always hated running but here I am in a class of running for dummies. There is a new store in our downtown called RUN WITH IT! They specialize in athletic wear and fitting shoes to people who run or walk. I read in the paper last week about a Running 101 program being taught by Danny Haralson, a Certified Coach of Road Runner's Clubs of AMerica. So I decided to give it a go.

When I say I hate running, that is no joke. My husband has been a runner for 45 years. He will go out on the hottest day in the year and run five miles and think it is just wonderful. He ran his first full marathon 2 years ago in Disney. He has tried to push and pull me into running all my life but it never worked. I tried and gave up many times. About 4 years ago, I met my friend Pat, and Pat taught me how to walk. She dragged me out at 6:30 2 days a week and walked slowly with me until I caught on. Now we can go 3 or 4 miles or more at a good pace and carry on a conversation. I owe a lot to her. I enjoy walking. So maybe I am ready for the next thing. I guess so because I am really excited about the prospect.

There are about 20 people in the class, all ages and shapes and I am by no means the least shapely. Danny told us that he was the founder of the Couch25K program. There are others who take credit for that too but I'll believe him for now. We started out with a mile walk/run. Walk 1/4 mile and then run back 4 times. I stayed with a woman who was a little slower than me, imagine that. Someone was actually slower and I stayed with her so she wouldn't feel like she was last. I was always last and therefore, never liked sports at all. Never got good at anything.

Our assignment this week is to go out and walk/run at least 5 times. So tonight, I will go out with my hubby. He is excited for me as this is my idea! Tuesday night is a group run at 6:00. The shop owner said there are many others who come out to run on Tuesday nights and they always have beer later. So, this is something hubby and I can do together. I'll go in one direction with the slow pokes and he can go in the other direction with the fast folks and we will meet in the middle. And enjoy our beer.

Oh, and I weighed this morning and lost another pound!
