Focus and Committment

Wednesday, December 09, 2009

Focus and Committment are definitely two things that I need to get my arms around. I've just been dabbling in weight loss, neither committing 100% or focusing on what I need to do. Last night we attended a party where a friend looked fabulous in her new dress and 25 pound weight loss. She's been going to her doctor to lose weight and has done well because she COMMITTED to the goal and FOCUSED on the process. I joined weight watchers a month ago. First week I lost 2.5 pounds. Skipped a couple of meetings due to family crisises and so when I went last week, I had gained 3.5 pounds. ??? I just haven't committed to even learning the points system and it seems so simple. The first week was easy. At the same time, I have been participating on this site and it is fun and I enjoy it. I'm only doing it half-a--, part time. I have to decide what to do. My mother-in-law came home from the hospital yesterday after a 4 week stay. She is better but not well. I'm taking her for her hair cut today over lunch so it will probably be something like a $5 pizza. My son and his 5 year old and 3 month old sons is coming to visit this weekend. Looking forward to it.

commitment is hard. I have trouble with this one too. I am really really good. or really really bad. I am persistent though. I have not given up. I do want to reach my goal if I live long enough to do that. This journey has been a long one for me. May God bless you.

When a door closes a window opens.

This week, rather than going on a much planned vacation to see our new grandson who was born in August, we were called out of the airport to the hospital. Allan's mother had been taken to the emergency room for the third time in 5 weeks. She had a pacemaker put in 5 weeks ago and at 90, her body is not responding well. Yesterday, the doctor suggested we start thinking about hospice. Hospice? What does that mean for us and for our life? No one knows but God and in times like these, I just have to let him direct me.
We had promised her that we would not put her into a nursing home so this morning, we were rearranging the family room in our minds to accomodate a bed. Is this God's plan for us!
Mom went into the hospital on Tuesday; Wednesday morning our 4th grandchild was born at another nearby hospital. We went to see him, 4 lbs 1oz, His mother had a difficult pregancy with her first child and this was not different except he got to stay with her until 35 weeks. She comes home today but the baby stays a little while longer to feed and grow.
This week, we will probably be bringing two people home;, one to start a new life and one at the end of life.

My Mother is 90 and in a nursing home, she has dementia and parkinsons. Hospice got involved with her about 2 years ago ,(when she was in the hospital the doctor said she had failure to thrive and had hospice get involved) They have been great. My Mother is still there 2.5 years. The nursing home and hospic are excelant.I understand what your going through and how painful it is, I will keep you and yours in my thoughts and prayer's........and in the mix congradulations on your new grand baby......carolyn

My first BLOG day!

Thursday, November 12, 2009

I'm an interior decorator and I write a decorating column for our local newspaper. I get lots of complements about my articles and lots of business as well. I like to write my column as it helps people learn about decorating. I also like to write for myself because I can dump stressful feelings, talk about what I want to talk about, and basically get it out of my system. Once I write it down, it goes away and I can start fresh.
I've decided to start a BLOG here on Sparkpeople to help me with my journey to better health. I've been on every diet imaginable. Well, maybe not every one but enough to know what to do. I may have found the connection recently that might help me. I joined the Sonoma Diet about 3 years ago and lost 18 pounds. It is a great program and the recipes are delicious. There is a book and a website and I have learned a lot. SD stopped working for me this year and I gained back about 14 pounds, never reaching my goal. I had briefly participated in Spark during that time. I got bored with it and people were not participating on the message boards like they were when I started. I wasn't getting motivation and the diet did not allow for slips like eating any type of sugar. A daily glass of wine is allowed and it is very flexible. One woman lost 88 pounds in about a year and a half and never once veered from the diet. My lifestyle and social commitments prohibited me from doing that. SOOOO I had to come up with a solution or be fat.
I decided to rejoin weight watchers. I am a lifemember but had not participated in years. But, the points system is very flexible and it does allow a brownie or ice cream as long as you count the points. I haven't completely gotten into it but I have lost 2.5 pounds in spite of that. So something must be working. So here I am. I'm hoping with sparkpeople and weight watchers and starting a daily blog will help me find the direction and support I need to finally get to a healthy weight, whatever that is.
I always end my decorating columns the same and so I will here. Until next time, have a happy decorating day! Carol

Having a plan is part of the weight loss process. II am far from my goal but I keep trying. I think that if I keep trying and do not totally give up I will finally make it there. My prayer for you is that You meet your goal. I am glad God has gifted you with the talent to decorate, how wonderful. You have two good tools to help you on your journey sparkpeople and weight watchers. Make them work for you as you work to achieve you goals. Take care and may God bless.

Good for you! We each have to find what works best for us. For some it is the SP diet but I think far more use WW, some use Atkins, etc. There is no one size fits all. Find the right food program for you, add in exercise, and you will make it!

That is what I feel SparkPeople is about. You work with what you want to do, yet you use Spark as a good base to track your daily food intake and your exercise. You can easily see the results with no hard math or such (my problem on one diet I was trying to do). So Welcome Back. You wil do great things.

I hope this works for you. You didn't say if you were excercising as well. That component has been the key for me. It allows me to work of some of my eating indiscretions.
