2nd time around

Thursday, February 21, 2013

I'm back. Its been a really rough past year dealing with moving and the death of my mom. I fell apart and stopped dieting. I really wish now that I had been able to stay strong but the past is past and I am determined to not give up and reach my goal! I loved my mom but it was really hard at times because she was constantly being very negative about my weight loss journey and it's easier this time already not being constantly torn down by the negative comments every day.

A woman's lifeline

A Woman’s Lifeline

Age 3: She looks at herself and sees a queen.

Age 8: She looks at herself and sees Cinderella

Age 15: She looks at herself and sees an ugly duckling (Mom, I can’t go to school looking like this today!)

Age 20: She looks at herself and sees “too fat/too thin, too short/too tall, too straight/too curly” but decides she’s going out anyway.

Age 30: She looks at herself and sees “too fat/too thin, too short/too tall, too straight/too curly” but decides she doesn’t have time to fix it so she’s going out anyway.

Age 40: She looks at herself and sees “too fat/too thin, too short/too tall, too straight/too curly” but says, “At least I am clean,” and goes out anyway.

Age 50: She looks at herself and says, “ I am what I am,” and goes wherever she wants to go.

Age 60: She looks at herself and reminds herself of all the people who can’t even see themselves in the mirror anymore. Goes out and conquers the world.

Age 70: She looks at herself and sees wisdom, laughter, and ability and goes out and enjoys life.

Age 80: Doesn’t bother to look. Just puts on a purple hat and goes out to have fun with the world.

The moral is, maybe we should grab that purple hat a little earlier.

    Warning

By Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

loving oneself

Saturday, June 11, 2011

" The truth is that loving oneself- and one's body-is a discipline all its own. It means challenging the images that the fashion industry has foisted on us. It means ignoring the voices that tell us that being healthy is a distant second to being thin"

I ran across this quote in a book that I am reading and it hit me that I really need to remember this. I get discouraged so easily when I don't lose the weight as fast as I want to or when I don't lose as many inches as I did the previous month. I need to remember that its the fact that I am living an active and healthy lifestyle that matters the most. I feel like a whole new person now than I did just a few months ago and its a great feeling!

What a great quote! The difference, between this time and all the other times that I dieted, is that I've kept my focus on developing healthy habits & a healthy lifestyle. It keeps me making changes even when the scale seems stuck. You've got the right focus & you're going to make that healthy life a reality!

strength training, smiles and laughter!

Wednesday, April 20, 2011

today as I was doing my strength training my 2 year old son came up and laid down on the mat next to me and started to copy what I was doing. It was so cute to watch him try and do a back extension. When I went to do my pullovers with the dumbbells he picked up a pencil and started to copy my movements. I loved watching this and I just smiled and laughed with him all the way through my strength training today!

I am so thankful that I decided to lose this weight and develop a healthy lifestyle while my kids are still young. I don't want them to go down this same path of obesity like my husband and I. They are learning to pick a fruit or veggies for snacks more often then not and they are actually starting to eat their vegetables without major complaints! I just hope that by us showing them a better example they will have a greater knowledge of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

This is a great story. I was just talking to a co-worker yesterday about my 12 year old doing strength training with me and how I get double the work out, the real workout with double the resistance due to laughing. She was telling me that her 5 year old does yoga with her and thinks she is copying the poses 'exactly' and says "I'm doing it mom, see me, I'm doing it!" This is what kids should learn about exercise, that it's fun!!! And that it's not to be dreaded or dreadful, it's supposed to be fun, and funny. Good for you in setting a great example for this dear sweet boy! He is darling! Thank you for sharing him with us.

Blessings to you on your journey to health and strength. Karen

Awesome. My grandchildren exercise with me when I visit. The older ones use canned goods for weights, and the younger one used shoes. It's fun watching them watch me.

Way to be a great role model for your children!
Isn't it great when we see our ideals and beliefs reflected in the behavior of our children? Sometimes they really DO listen - but they are ALWAYS watching!

I love this! My daughter always jumps in next to me if I've doing a Biggest Loser video or trying to do yoga. It makes me feel good that I'm trying to change now. Like you said, when they're young and they'll get good habits. He's such a cutie!

new clothes!

Sunday, April 17, 2011

my mom took me to a rummage sale and told me to get some new shirts and I found quite a few that will work soon or already work! I got size large or smaller and refused to buy anything above that! It made my day in a couple of ways. Large shirts that actually fit me now! (I started at 2X ) I have just been wearing all my shirts baggy for a while and I was surprised to see that larges actually fit rather nicely! emoticon another thing was that my mom was actually showing her support and actually did something that boost me up instead of being negative about this whole weight loss! That helped me more than the shirts fitting better! She wants to take me to another one in a few weeks to find me some more new clothes and I am all for it! I don't want to have to spend a fortune on new clothes that I only plan to be in for a little while. I want to wait till I hit my goal weight and have stayed there a few months before I get all new stuff. I need to remember this act of kindness from her when she turns around and gets negative again. I know it will come and I want to be ready so I can just let it roll off my back and not tear me down!!

Congrats on your smaller sizes! What an awesome job you have done to go from a 2X to a large. People don't always know how to be supportive, and they don't like change. Keep up the good work.

I am so glad to see that she is finally turning around and supporting you instead of being so negative. I know that helps alot. But you have shown her that you can do it. That purple shirt she said you would never get into, fits you perfectly now right??? Your proving her wrong. You go girl!!!!

Maybe she'll surprise you and not attempt to tear you down. Maybe she's come to terms with the new you and is starting to adjust to it. Maybe being a mommy doesn't come with an instruction book, so they have to figure it out as they go along.

..........oops...did I say that last sentence out loud?

Mama loves you! Enjoy your time together and embrace this new facet of your relationship without waiting for the other shoe to drop. You just might "grow" on each other!

I've been buying some clothes at consignment shops as well to get me through the weight loss. Anything new, I'm buying a smaller size and I'll wait to wear them because I know that's where I'm headed.
Keep up the positive attitude. It's always best to have the emotional support but you can't always get it. I'm one of the biggest women in my family and it's hard for the smaller ones to know and understand that I try but it's not easy to lose weight.

Awesome!! Congrats on the smaller sizes. Don't worry about your mom, you are the one who has to live with your body, not her. Maybe she will start being more supportive in the future. But if not there is one important thing to remember: what matters most is what YOU think about how well you are doing, no one else.
