What to Do When Snowed In

Thursday, November 25, 2010

First, get DH to bring in firewood in case we lose power.

Then let him handle the shovel for a while.

Be sure to let the critters help!!

Move the snow around a bit.

Continue to build.

A shape begins to emerge

Add a bit of dressing

A few Final touches.......

And the Snow Queen is ready for the Snow Ball.

What a beautiful scene for the holidays! I hope you had time to enjoy the turkey dinner and all the fixins. We are cold but sunny in the southwest. How lucky we are to have wonderful husbands to help and a warm fireplace to snooze by. Your snowqueen is ready for the royal wedding but I doubt if she will last until April.

How cute! However I don't envy you the snow because I'm in southern New Mexico where we think it's cold today because the temp is 45 degrees LOL! Looks like you are all set for any emergencies due to the snow!

Love your 'snow queen' and seeing Winston and your hubby! I did not get out and get my snowman made yesterday; I got home and immediately got into another one of my 'while we're at it' projects: making new placemats and napkins for Thanksgiving. Yeah, I do crazy things like that--deciding I don't like what I have and making something new the day before (or the day of) a special event. I'm pretty happy with how they turned out, although our daughter called this morning to say she was sick so now we're not celebrating Thanksgiving until tomorrow.

I think I might be able to scrape together enough snow today before it all melts to make a small one, though; I'm going to go do that right now!

EDIT: Mission accomplished; one small snowman complete!

Your "snowed-in" adventure sounds great! Mine is a little different, no hubby to tote the fire wood in, or to "man" the snow shovel, so the only time I ventured outside today was to tote the wood myself and even then, I hurried to get the job done. Any "snow queen" or even snow ball will have to wait for another day when the temp isn't minus 15 degrees. However, I am finding strong feelings of comfort and peace mixed in with the unusual awareness of welcome isolation. - and even though I didn't venture out to even build a modest snowman (in minus 15 degrees, I felt a little intimidated), I am enjoying being snowed-in. Hope you are, too.

History Lesson on Your Social Security Card

Monday, November 22, 2010

Just in case some of you young whippersnappers (& some older ones) didn't know this. It's easy to check out, if you don't believe it. Be sure and show it to your family and friends. They need a little history lesson on what's what and it doesn't matter whether you are Democrat or Republican. Facts are Facts.
Social Security Cards up until the 1980s expressly stated the number and card were not to be used for identification purposes. Since nearly everyone in the United States now has a number, it became convenient to use it anyway and the message, NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION, was removed.[9]

An old Social Security card with the "NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION" message.
Our Social Security

Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social
Security (FICA) Program. He promised:

1.) That participation in the Program would be
Completely voluntary,

No longer Voluntary

2.) That the participants would only have to pay
1% of the first $1,400 of their annual
Incomes into the Program,

Now 7.65%
on the first $106,800

3.) That the money the participants elected to put
into the Program would be deductible from
their income for tax purposes each year,

No longer tax deductible

4.) That the money the participants put into the
independent 'Trust Fund' rather than into the
general operating fund, and therefore, would
only be used to fund the Social Security
Retirement Program, and no other
Government program, and,

Under Johnson the money was moved to
The General Fund and Spent

5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as income.

Under Clinton & Gore
Up to 85% of your Social Security can be Taxed

Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are
now receiving a Social Security check every month --
and then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of
the money we paid to the Federal government to 'put
away' -- you may be interested in the following:

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- ----

Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the
independent 'Trust Fund' and put it into the
general fund so that Congress could spend it?

A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically
controlled House and Senate.

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --

Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax
deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding?

A: The Democratic Party.

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -----

Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social
Security annuities?

A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the
'tie-breaking' deciding vote as President of the
Senate, while he was Vice President of the US

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -

Q: Which Political Party decided to start
giving annuity payments to immigrants?

AND MY FAVORITE:

A: That's right!

Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party.
Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65,
began to receive Social Security payments! The
Democratic Party gave these payments to them,
even though they never paid a dime into it!

------------ -- ------------ --------- ----- ------------ --------- ---------

Then, after violating the original contract (FICA),
the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security away!

And the worst part about it is uninformed citizens believe it!
If enough people receive this, maybe a seed of
awareness will be planted and maybe changes will
evolve. Maybe not, some Democrats are awfully
sure of what isn't so.

But it's worth a try. How many people can YOU send this to?

Actions speak louder than bumper stickers

Any information that we get needs to receive our own research and study. This discussion has raised several interesting questions and political history is always a revelation. My grandparents used to fear the poor farm and I recall an old white house where elders were housed in Utah when they were indigent. No doubt our social welfare system has problems but why not improve it rather than toss it away. emoticon

There are a lot of us baby boomers coming along, so our country better get busy and figure out how they're going to handle the coming crisis. I wish I had all the money I paid into DD over the years. I'd have a lot more income now than SS can provide.

If more voters were informed BEFORE they voted, we may not be dealing with all these mistakes, but our system does not promote knowledge before, only after they make a mistake! And if more people really knew what Democrats are promting these days they would think twice to belong to that party! Democrats only have and always have put us in debt; never got us out of debt. They only spend! Republicans are the ones that promote saving and spending wisely!

Report Inappropriate Comment
GIANT-STEPS 11/22/2010 6:12PM

This gets pretty much everything wrong.

Social Security was never voluntary. Not everyone was in the system but it wasn't voluntary.

SS was never limited to the first $1,400 of income and 1% was only the initial rate; it was intended to gradually increase to 3% in the first decade of SS.

SS taxes were never deductible on federal income tax.

SS is not part of our government's general fund. Its money is loaned to other government programs (especially wars) through bonds though.

SS benefits became taxable income in 1983 when Ronald Reagan was in office.

Immigrants do not automatically receive SS benefits. In order to qualify for SS benefits you have to pay into SS for 40 quarters. My Mother-in-Law who has lived in this country her whole life does not qualify for SS benefits on her own because she hasn't paid into it for at least 40 quarters (though she does qualify for benefits under her husband who has).

There is a reason stuff like this is distributed as chain letters. Because they are mostly untrue. It's the authors of stuff like this that take advantage of uninformed people. One question I have is how much time did you spend researching the claims of this chain letter before posting it as gospel? Thought so.

A MOMENT OF SANITY AND PATRIOTISM

Saturday, November 20, 2010

Perhaps you heard about a 13-year-old boy named Cody, his
bicycle, and his banned American flag. The story has been
covered by many media outlets, including Fox News.

Well, I want to tell you the rest of the story...

For the past several months, Cody Alicea regularly rode his
bike to school decorated with an American flag. He did it
because he loves his country and to honor veterans like
his grandfather.

Just last week while at Denair Middle School in Denair,
California, Cody was confronted by a school administrator.
The official told Cody he could no longer display his
American flag on his bike while his bike was on school
property.

Cody was told that others had complained about
the American flag and were offended by its
presence. The school Superintendent went so far
as to say that displaying the U.S. flag could
promote racial tensions on campus!

Under protest, Cody began removing the flag and storing it
in his backpack during school hours.

Sadly, stories like this usually end here, with students
like Cody intimidated into silence and denied their rights
by school officials who are either misinformed or
intentionally bullying our children.

But not this time...

Because, friends like you made it possible for Liberty Counsel
to intervene and defend Cody's rights!

In fact, within a few hours of the first attack on Cody's
rights, our Liberty Counsel team was already taking action.

Our staff issued a strongly-worded "Demand Letter" to the
Denair Unified School District challenging their
"Unconstitutional Censorship of Student Expression."

We demanded that the Superintendent reverse the decision
to ban Cody from displaying his American flag while riding
his bicycle on school property and reminded the school that
the Supreme Court has clearly affirmed that students do not
"shed their Constitutional rights of freedom of speech or
expression at the school house gate."

Liberty Counsel also offered to defend Cody's rights at no
charge and take the school district to court if necessary.

Suddenly, the school changed its tune! They dropped their
ban on the American flag - and Cody's dad credits Liberty
Counsel for causing the change:

"One day [school officials] didn't want to speak
to us and the next day they couldn't talk fast
enough to apologize. They thought we were going
to sue them. I believe this letter from Liberty
Counsel made a giant difference. The school
staff is very sorry now."

The next day, the news was filled with reports of a spontaneous,
patriotic celebration outside the school! A caravan of
flag-flying motorcyclists accompanied Cody to school,
where he was greeted by flag-waving classmates who joined
together to say the Pledge of Allegiance.

Great to know we still have rights, because I was so angry they caused that kid to feel so bad, and what they did. I am so glad they changed their mind, and I would have sued for damages if I were the parents for that sure can hurt a child. worst kind of harrassment is from an adult and one whose in a powerful position. I hope he got fired! I take personal freedom taken aay from me very seriously! And to think they also shamed this kid about being Patriotic. Shame on that school! whats this world coming to that Citizens ahve to take second palce to foreigners in oru schools! Pathetic! Glad you shared it with us! For I felt it was going way too far!It was his personal rights to display a flag! and it was infringing on his Constitutional rights! I think its pathetic that these dam liberals want to shame us to forget all abotu what we gained in Freedoms. Its bad when you cant be proud of your country! Real bad when adults do such to children too! To me this was the alst straw! I blame Obama for it all! Because he got away with it, Liberals think they can take all our rights away! Dam the bullies!

As I understand it racial tensions at the school escalated when some students brought Mexican flags to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. That's when the policy of no flags started. Not sure if any Hispanic students actually complained about the American flag, I read conflicting reports about this. One story said he was asked not to fly the flag because of complaints while another story said it was out of concern for his safety.

Of course the school overstepped its authority here but I just wanted to point out there is a little more to the story than what gets reported in the conservative echo chamber.

"B-b-b-but it's his fault ... he started it"....a must read

Friday, November 19, 2010

The Washington Post babbled again today about Obama inheriting a huge deficit from Bush. Amazingly enough, a lot of people swallow this nonsense.
So once more, a short civics lesson.

Budgets do not come from the White House. They come from Congress and the party that controlled Congress since January 2007 is the Democratic Party.

Furthermore, the Democrats controlled the budget process for FY 2008 and FY 2009 as well as FY 2010 and FY 2011.

In that first year, they had to contend with George Bush, which caused them to compromise on spending, when Bush somewhat belatedly got tough on spending increases.

For FY 2009 though, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid bypassed George Bush entirely, passing continuing resolutions to keep government running until Barack Obama could take office. At that time, they passed a massive omnibus spending bill to complete the FY 2009 budgets.

And where was Barack Obama during this time? He was a member of that very Congress that passed all of these massive spending bills, and he signed the omnibus bill as President to complete FY 2009. Let's remember what the deficits looked like during that period: (below)

If the Democrats inherited any deficit, it was the FY 2007 deficit, the last of the Republican budgets. That deficit was the lowest in five years, and the fourth straight decline in deficit spending. After that, Democrats in Congress took control of spending, and that includes Barack Obama, who voted for the budgets.

If Obama inherited anything, he inherited it from himself.

In a nutshell, what Obama is saying is - I inherited a deficit that I voted for and then I presided over an expansion of that deficit four-fold since January 20th, 2009.

There is no way this will be widely publicized, Unless each of us sends it on! This is your chance to make a difference.
If it hasn't gotten your attention yet.

Unless you're in a government job, you've seen a major contraction in the job picture. But you probably already knew that.

My response to this is not intended to take away from your message. I would really wish to agree with you that the messages we need to hear aren't getting accross as we spend too much time denigrating the other sides position. If we could get to work on solving the deficit together instead of blaming each other things might improve. Too Pollyana? Well, the country is split right down the middle and until we solve this - our problems will only increase, deficit or not. Perhaps the deficit is the way we can measure the success of our ability to work together. We're not doing a good job no matter the political party we side on.

I agree with you, we need to hear all sides of the argument. Frankly though, I don't want to bother with who did what. It doesn't focus on priority which is working together to create a more positive future - one that may or may not include a deficit but will for some time to come - we have it now.

Until we manage to get this 50/50 split healed we'll keep inheriting deficits and polarized positions that only make the situation worse. The issues you mention are important clearly but it's not important what side we are on. What is important is that we see sides and focus on the side where the other party isn't perfect.

I liked the Slowest Losers blog today. He suggested that if we have difficult speaking to another and can't see their perspective, that we should try wishing for and giving them what we wish for ourselves. If we can do this Republicans and Democrats alike, we might succeed in reducing the deficit and working cooperatively to fix our common problems.

Your comments are likely to be widely publicized since Obama has lots of detractors. He also has lots of supporters. Focusing on who's for vs who's agin will propagate the problem. Perhaps we need a President who can bring us all together! Oh no, that means a bigger war is coming. Historically that's the the one thing that tends to bring polar opposites together!

We need to learn to listen to each other's perspective instead of believing that we each have the others demise in mind. I plead for all of us to develop a kinder listening for those who believe otherwise.

A wise Spark Friend of mine posted this today - ' Be kind to your enemies, it makes them crazy!' I can't remember who said this but it alone highlights how we got into trouble in the first place.

Boy, I've been writing this and feeling more uncomfortable as I keep going. I wonder if I am being rude or ridiculous in my response but I believe with all I've got that this is so and so our political situation is the results of not being able to see, work with and collaborate with another...

The spirit of independence in America is what made us great and what might bring us down if we can't acknowledge we are so much alike despite what it looks like from the outside!

emoticon blog to get us thinking and for me personally to stretch my courage to speak up. Thanks for posting!
