Hope you have a great race - I love that park, and remember going there a few years ago with my beloved father. I may "visit" him at the National Cemetary this weekend.

I registered for six races today!

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

I just ran my first official 5K this month and have registered for six more! emoticon

I heard these races are addicting!

Actually, the first five are with my running group. We did a couple of these last fall too. Instead of doing our run that day, we just did the 5K with the registered runners. Only this year we had to pay a small amount for all five races, no T-shirt, but we get chip timing! This, to me makes it official! It felt so strange last year when we were given a popsicle stick at the end of the race and told to write our time on that. That just didn't seem like a race to me.

The other race I signed up for is a charity race, Friends of Lake Louisa State Park. This is a beautiful area, and only one of a few places in our town with public swimming. We only went to the Park once a few years ago and this is a great time to revisit, with a race.

Finally, I found a race to satisfy my goal for my first half marathon. This race is brand new for the area as of today. It is on February 12, 2012, Rock and Roll Saint Peterburg! Sounds like so much fun and will be the second anniversary of my running! I'm so excited and looking forward to Rock and Roll!

Planned fun weekend turned into ER visit!

Sunday, May 15, 2011

On my Friday blog, I mentioned I had a fun weekend planned watching a triathalon/duathalon/5k race and then hit up a couple health fairs in town this weekend. Well instead, we went out of town to help SIL move. When I got there I thought "wow, three flights of outside stairs and no elevators!" Now, I'm not used to stairs, in my daily life I do not encounter a single stair. Not that I don't want to but I live in a ranch style one story house and I also work at home. But it wasn't bad, up and down the stairs with boxes, furniture. "Thank goodness for SP cardio and strength training and my running training." My cardio, legs and arms were up for the challenge. The new place wasn't far at all, about two miles, and only one story. I made one trip with my vehicle full.

Back at the old place, after about another hour of packing and moving and lugging downstairs, DH and BIL made another trip to new house. Then, about 20 minutes after they leave, we get a call to come toward the new house. I said "wait, lets grab a few things to move since my SUV is empty". I'm driving and they keep calling for us to hurry, there is an emergency. Finally, they tell us my DH has had an accident and is in the ambulance. Oh my! (not exactly what I said). So we get there and they let me in the ambulance. DH is alert and very talkative, just in pain and bruised up. Then he tells me he fell from the back of a pickup while holding onto something that was falling off. !!##??!!! etc!!! So, we spent 4 hours at a ER unfamiliar to me.

I'm happy to report DH is well, still bruised and sore but fortunate to be all in one piece. He is being a champ, walking around and moving the sore parts so they won't freeze up. Hopefully, he has learned his lesson to not be so stupid next time!

Runner training group and fun weekend ahead

Friday, May 13, 2011

This ends my second week of runner training. This group is so friendly. Yesterday I had some pain in my leg and the coach showed me some stretching exercises to alleviate the pain. I think if I didn't have a coach I would just stop running for a couple weeks. It's been hot, in the 90s every day since Sunday, but I just put on my sunblock and grab my ice water and enjoy the run. We'll pick it up 7 a.m. Sunday morning for our long run.

The bootcamp I considered doing on my days off has changed. Instead it is more exercise dance fun at the beach. I'm so happy because the bootcamp involved lots of body sculpting machines but the exercise dance is mostly aerobics. I can do my strength training at my home workout studio. I've decided to go just twice a week (it is the same time as my run training) and do something a little less intense like walking and hill practice on Fridays and Saturdays. Those are my gardening days and, of course, Saturday is fun day when I'm not working.

Speaking of fun, I found so far two Health Fairs in the community tomorrow. I absolutely love fairs and festivals especially where there are vendors giving out goodies! There is also a triathalon/duathalon/5K within walking distance of me so I'm getting up early to go see that.

Have a wonderful weekend SparkFriends!

My first 5K!

Saturday, May 07, 2011

This morning I ran my first "official" 5K. It was a charity run for Sarah's Daughter's, a faith-based organization dedicated to the restoration and preservation of marriages, "In it to WIN IT 5K".

Now I've ran a couple 5k races with my training group last year and a virtual 5k through SP "5K your Way" but this was the first official one. What made it different - I paid (donated) an entry fee, I got a T-shirt, and I got an ankle bracelet chip that tracked my start to finish time which was 41.08 minutes.

The weather was beautiful with a nice cool breeze off the lake. There were only 30 participants so by the time we started everybody had pretty much seen all the other participants. I met several other people who were using this as their first 5K. DH came with me to cheer me on.

The race started with a 1-2-3 GO. There were about half and half walkers and runners. I ran for a few minutes and then started with my run-walk intervals 1 minute walk/1 minute run. Then, halfway through at a water station I decided I needed a restroom break before going any further. WHO DOES THAT IN A 5K!?!?

After I finished my restroom break, I spent the next mile focusing on catching up with and passing the participants who had passed me while I was "away."

The last half mile DH walked with me. Near the finish line I ran strong for a great finish. Woo hoo! Looked for the camera - the photographer was bent over talking to someone. Bummer.

It was a great time. There was a little award ceremony afterwards and I met a couple new friends, one that I invited to my runner training group so I may see her again tomorrow morning. Food was good too!

Thanks so much for all your comments!

@ MAGSINGVAL, I had the Gymboss interval timer clipped to my waistband. I didn't see anyone there with earphones. And my goal is to complete at least a half marathon, maybe even a marathon, in my 55th year (which will start in August this year!
