Update on SIL

For those who don't already know, my SIL is fighting bone and liver cancer. Started out as breast cancer years ago.
She is haing a bad time of it now. She can't have her chemo as she has a lot of swelling in her legs. Doc suggested going into the hospital to have it taken care of, but she refused. She told me that she heard once you go in you don't come home. I'd forgotten she said that till now. I hope her mom can talk her into going in, then she can start her chemo back up.

She has been taking meds for the swelling, water retention in her legs and stomach and they won't do chemno as long as they are that way.

All they did today after doc visit was to flush her port. She seemed so tired, weak and a little confused at times.

    I recently went through this with my cousin, who was like a sister to me. About 16 years ago, I went there to live with her a few months to help her fight breast cancer. She was cancer-free after that; or at least that's what they told her. Then, five years ago, she was told about bone cancer. Over the next three years (up until 2 years ago when she died), I watched it spread to liver and brain. It was a nightmare and I felt so helpless. I am still trying to recover from the tremendous loss this has been in my life. I wish all of you the best. Keep in mind there's a non-profit that provides free housecleaning - Cleaning for a Reason. If they have a cleaning company that volunteers in her city, they can help with 3-4 free cleanings.

So, so very sorry for your SIL. Sounds like things aren't good and it's just a bad situation all around. How great that you are able to be there for her. I can't imagine.

    OMG I'm soooooooo sorry to hear this and I'll say a prayer for her that she gets stronger and by the grace of god things will turn around for her.
God Bless this poor woman and her family for the hell your all going through, I honestly hope things get better for her! emoticon
You know my dad was on a respirator for 16 days last year and no one gave him a chance in hell to make it... I went to church everyday lighting candles and I got a small card of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and put it by his bed and it made all the difference.

I know that when I have a challenge that calls for 8-glasses of water a day, I automatically put '0' down, because I can't do 8. I can do between 6-7 glasses of water. Some teams I've been on call for 6-8 glasses. Some people just don't need the 8-glasses a day.

    I don't know if I'm eatng the right foods that contain much water. I do have cereal for breakast, with milk. Other days I'll have toast or pancaks.
Bake Ziti today.

I will have lettuce, pineapple in my salad with dressing and pieces of chicken. Probably applesauce for snack tonight.

    I have heard that you can "count" half of your "water" in "other liquids"... juice, coffee (only ONE cup of coffee can count!). As long as it's not alcohol! Even soups can count. I usually get at least 6 glasses of WATER a day, but count 8, because of the other liquids.

    If your reccomendation is actually 6.5 and you get that or 7 then I would count it Courti. So you take those 0's and make them 10's.

I almost find the water challenge to easy as I usually get 8-12 glasses a day in the summer but really slow down to just 8 for the winter. But I do so love the taste of water.

When someone says water has no taste I think.............wow My good ol Arkansas water has the sweetest taste in the world to me.

All you can do Courti is emoticon and you always do that.

    Well you're smart to listen to your body, because the recommendation really depends on your body weight. What they say is .5 oz x your weight = total oz.

That would put you at 52 oz. which is 6.5 glasses - pretty much what you've said. Too much water can actually throw off the body chemistry and be bad for you.

So, adapt the challenge for you, I do know that when I get all the water in I'm supposed to have, I do lose more consistently, but my intake is around 9 glasses a day - which I can't do! I can do 7, but that means I'm headed to the bathroom every 30-40 minutes!

Hmmm, maybe it isn't the water that helps with the weight loss - maybe it's all that running to the potty!

CoHP - My Short and Long Term Goals

For this class we have to write down both our short and long term goals, rewards along the way and steps I will use to accomplish them.

Short term goal, is to get myself into a mind set to seriously keep to my routine to eat healthy and exercise everyday. Not to just get some minutes in for the challenge for my team, but enough minutes that will whip my body into shape.

I donít have any rewards, except to look in the mirror and like what I see. What steps, just to keep to a schedule of exercise and eat more freggies.

I canít get into the mind set I was in 2009. I tracked everyday and put in 30 - 60 min emoticon cardio plus emoticonstrength everyday, on different body parts. I ate more freggies emoticon emoticon .

I just canít get myself to put in those minutes. Iím either posting or caught up reading or watching TV.

I used to go to Zumba weekly and workout on my Wii, and did yoga. I don't do any of that now, except now and then I do yoga...or rather stretches.

Iím doing better than I was a month or two ago though! emoticon

    I think that Nell offers you some wonderful advise. We all change and our bodies change and our moods change but throw some sneaky things in your exercise routine and see what happens.

And remember how you use to feel doing that yoga and Zumba and such, if it made you feel wonderful and healthy it will again if you get back to it.

Just go at your own pace but never go backwards. emoticon

    Baby steps Court - maybe make yourself hop up and do some sit-ups or leg-lifts during the commercials? I understand what you're saying. Even at my highest weight I was still getting my workouts in because I fear the "big rock syndrome." What's that you ask...

Well, I figure it's easier to keep this old body moving than let it stop and try to get it started again.

So picture yourself pushing a big rock. It's alway slow getting started, but once you get on a roll going faster and being more consistent just gets easier over time!

CoHP - How I got to this point in my life

For one of my classes at Hogwarts, I have to blog on how I got to this point in my life.

This point, being on my way to where I was in 2009. I was at my goal weight and lower; I was at the skinniest that Iíd ever been; I felt great, physically and healthy.

Then things happen that took me away from that routineÖfamily matters. I gained weight and inches, stressed out and felt like CRAP that I let myself get this way.

Iíve started trying to get back into a routine to eat somewhat healthier and exercise more, especially on the parts that need it moreÖ.abs..hips and rear.

I canít get back into that same routine I was into in 2009, but trying what I can.

P.S. Don't let anyone tell you you can't lose and get healthily skinny at any age. I was in my late 50s and at my skinniest.

    I'm 61 and I've never been happier or fitter, though I've certainly been slimmer. I worked out once that if I added up all the pounds I've taken off, or put on over my lifetime so far, I'd have enough to make a medium sized elephant! My guru, Paul McKenna ( I can make you thin ) reckons that if you stick to your rules 8/10 days that's good enough, and anything out of ten is a good start. Don't beat yourself up about the bad days, focus on today and pat yourself on the back if you can make it. emoticon

It is great that you are trying to get back to where you were in 2009. I know it can be so frustrating. In 2005 I had lost 100 pounds. Guess what? I gained back 110. :( But, this time I am going to lose it again and differently. Because I am not on a DIET, I am making a life style change. Just take one day at a time!

To Dye or not to Dye

I'm trying to decide whether to dye my hair or not. I have salt and pepperish (gray and some dark hair) and still a little of the light auburn from last dye job. I was going to let it grow out and see what it looks like. My beautician said it would look...well ugly, can't remember just how she said it.(she's related). I bought a cheap dye in case I do decided to use it. I can't get my roots though,
I can only put the dye through my hair since I can't get my arm up to do roots.

WWhat do you think, go salt and pepper and not bother with dying or dye and get my auburn back?

    Thanks for all the advice. I really appreciate it. I may let it go gray see what it all looks like, then dye it. good idea with the spatula. I bought a dye, but will see if I like it grayish or not.

    i often dye my hair because of the grays and whites that pop up but i am still in my 20s, although my mother, mil and grandmother all still dye their hair. The tip i gave to people who couldn't really reach in was to use a plastic spatula to rub it in in the places they couldn't get. Maybe that may work for you if you want to go for another colour.

    I started going grey in my early 20s (I remember thinking, "Wow, I guess I really am an adult!" after noticing my first grey hair when I turned 21).

My hubby also started greying in his 20s, so I never felt pressured to dye my hair as the years went by. His philosophy was that it was pretty cool to have hair that was always changing, so it helped me to have a healthy attitude about my own grey hair as it slowly took over my natural dark brown.

Beauticians are funny...my aunt (68 years old with flaming Lucille Ball red dyed hair) always does that thing when she sees me...you know, where they kind of semi-rearrange your hair as they talk to you, saying, "I wish you'd let me do something with this..." My sister-in-law is my beautician, and she's never suggested dying my hair, other than telling me that coloring it would make it a little less coarse if more manageable hair was my concern. I think all beauticians just like to do things to people's hair because they can. Whether it's style, color, texture -- they enjoy having someone's head to play with.

I wouldn't worry about looking older. Although I'm only 47, I think my weight adds more years to me than my hair does. I've gotten compliments on my hair, with most people saying they'd let theirs go grey if they knew it would be as evenly dispersed as mine (which is now pretty much all varying shades of grey and silver).

I never really think about it anymore. Well, I guess once in awhile I snicker to myself, when I think I'll look more or less the same as the years go by, while my friends will eventually stop dyeing their hair and perhaps look older. It's a brief snicker, but still...

Bottom line, do what is comfortable for you to maintain. You'll look good no matter what!

    Color is a commitment, doing the roots every couple of weeks. Before you go for the look, be sure you are up to the commitment.

    Do what makes you happy :) If you want to give it a go and see what the silver/gray looks like, then go for it. You can always dye it later. I found out I look terrible, so it's a box of dye for me!

    Believe me, I wish my SIL could dye my hiar whehter I wanted it or not. She hasn't been doing very well and I don't think it is the chemo doing it. Barbara gave me a site on gray hair, I may try it natural first like you said. I just wish I didn't have the dark and had a wisp of auburn, but I don't so salt and pepper is okay. I've got more pepper than I thought I'd have. haha

    To bad your DH will not help you out and put your color in. You could go into a professional beauty supply and get your color way cheaper and he could do it. But try natural and see what you think? If you like it then stay and if not then maybe your SIL or MIL will help you out and do the color for you.

    I have taken time off of work so I have let myself go natural and am really shocked at how gray I am...I don't really like it and will go back to the semi permanent colour of Redken Shades EQ......its conditioning and thickening and I get it online so I save myself the $90 an application.

    I would let it go for now to see how it is. Then if you really want to go auburn then go ahead and dye it. I've let my own hair go natural, and it's streaked with gray but I like it. I am hoping my hair will do like my grandma's and aunts' hair and turn that beautiful shade of white.

    I've let my own long, thick hair go natural because it's a lovely silver on black. However, I also have a short auburn with grey wig and a long, dk brown wig with no gray. I like the variety.

Why not try the natural for awhile just to see? You can always color it later, but I'm a big fan of having PROFESSIONALS do color.

    It will not be gray. It will be silver. Silver is the new gray!

    Yeah, I can't afford to go to anyone except for a haircut and she gives us a break now and then. I bought a dye for around $3.00 Auburn, just in case I decided to change and if not, then it didn't cost much. Athough it would have been enough to buy a nother book in my series at the paperback Book exchange. LOL

    Really to make the best decision we need to see what you look like. My hairdresser put in some highlights where the gray is when I went from a longer perm to a short cut with no perm - the color was to help give it some body. Anyway, as it's growing out it looks very natural. That was the first time in my life I had color - mainly because I'm too lazy to keep it up! And it's too expensive to have the hair dresser keep it up!

    I really like the light auburn color and wish it was my natural color. My natural color before I ever started to dyeit was real dark brown. In pictures it looks like a tinge of red, but just barely. I love the auburn look. It doesn't make me look too old like if I was to go dark, for my age 63.

    This might sound like a cop out but what colour makes you feel better about yourself? I'm a natural blonde but I've been bright red (pink, purple, dusky rose) and now a natural red for years, I feel more 'me' when my hair is dyed.

Either way I'm sure you'll look amazing.

    I say go natural. Of course, because I am allergic to hair dye, I cannot do mine so natural is it. But I think natural is also beautiful - as much as I miss my more auburn-tinged hair, the color now suits my age.
