In spring, the axis of the Earth is increasing its tilt toward the Sun and the length of daylight rapidly increases for the relevant hemisphere. The hemisphere begins to warm significantly causing new plant growth to "spring forth," giving the season its name.

The first climatological day of spring, as mandated by the World Meteorological Organization, is March 1 every year in the northern hemisphere and September 1 every year in the southern hemisphere.

Canada, the USA, and some European countries customarily observe the astronomical date (ca. March 20-21/ca. September 22-23) while Australia, New Zealand, and some other European countries follow the climatological date (March 1/September 1). Customary dates are often declared "official" by the mass media although no legal basis exists for this designation. Preferences for the astronomical or climatological dates vary in other countries. Lunar dates are used across much of east Asia to determine the beginning of spring.

The ecological beginning of spring (vernal season) has no fixed dates but is marked locally by the beginning of the growing season for most plants when the local mean daily temperature reaches 6 degrees C/42 degrees F. Many ecologists also recognize a pre-spring (prevernal) season that precedes spring. Pre-spring is a transitional time at the end of winter when only the hardiest plants like the crocus begin to bloom.

Tropical regions of the Earth do not have a spring season.

Vernal equinox

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

March 20, 2012, is a date that most of us recognize as symbolic of changing seasons. As we welcome spring, people south of the equator are actually gearing up for the cooler temperatures of autumn.

What Happens at the Equinox?

Far from being an arbitrary indicator of the changing seasons, March 20 (March 21 in some years) is significant for astronomical reasons. On March 20, 2012, at precisely 1:14 A.M. EDT (March 20, 05:14 Universal Time), the Sun will cross directly over the Earth's equator. This moment is known as the vernal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. For the Southern Hemisphere, this is the moment of the autumnal equinox.

Equinox Means "Equal Night"

Translated literally, equinox means "equal night." Because the Sun is positioned above the equator, day and night are about equal in length all over the world during the equinoxes. A second equinox occurs each year on Sept. 22 or 23; in 2012, it will be on Sept. 22 at 10:49 A.M. EDT. This date will mark the autumnal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere and the vernal equinox in the Southern (vernal denotes "spring").

Thanks for the info. I was born on the Summer Solstice and never really paid attention to the significance of it other than having my birthday on the longest day of the year!

Unfortunately the comment boxes do not support links, but this is where I found some info on the Solstice

Irish dance all the way! I have several of his shows on DVD, plus various versions of Riverdance. That is how I got my sons to take lessons when I was Irish dancing - the saw the videos and said, "Mommy, boys can do it, too?!" gotta love it - great workout, great stress reliever, and just so much fun. Thanks for sharing the links.

Pyrotechnics, shadow boxing, Russian Cossack 'squat n' kick' on the 1st link wasn't my taste, but the back ground dancers & the last song was worth it.

I'm pretty much an old fashioned Appalachian mountain clogger... or used to be. It's an EZ gr8 cardio.

Oh, heck yeah!! That 2nd link is more like it!! DANG!!

Okay, that's (3rd link) a goose-bump tear-jerk.

Fiddling with a violinist!! Caught myself lookin' for King Brian & Darby O'Gill on that 4th link!! hahahahaha!!

DANG!! Okay... so now I am thoroughly IMPRESSED!! Thanks sooo MUCH for sharing, Courti!! emoticon I sure hope Disney signs the guy!! If not... well I'd say Pixar but Disney bought that animation company out, sooo... maybe Aurora Productions (1978) created by former executives of Disney (Rich Irvine & James L. Stewart) who produced The Secret of NIMH, will nab him!!

And we can't go today - boo! In our local paper, there was an article about a Washington, D.C. couple who is going to the Magic Kingdom first thing this morning, then taking an evening nonstop flight here to go to Disneyland. Wild! I would have loved to do that.

Must be nice, if one lives in or near Florida or California!! We visited the Florida park in Oct. 2010 and about half of the exhibits I wanted to see (including "It's A Small World", which I've seen gobs of times in California but had never gotten to see the Florida park, as it was being built just as my family moved away from Florida in 1972.), were all closed due to remodeling/reconstruction/refurbish
ing and I think adding some new stuff near the old rides. So it was all fenced up and covered with various coverings. It was also first time our son had ever gotten to go.

Alright-y then... obviously DISNEY is the theme. How come some teams learn this b4 other teams? Must be a captain's prerogative. No matter. If it's always gonna' be who gets the theme b4 the others, they can have it.
