Personal Wellness - Fri

I am striving to accomplish most of the BLC weekend challenge. I'm trying to stay in range, keep cholesterol in range, eat 6 freggies a day, but I doubt that I will be able to eat the rainbow. I don't have any blue/purple.

What is applesauce, red for apple? What is fig, like in the newton fig cakes? Aren't they brown; brown is part of the rainbow. I can count it as a freggie at least.

For picky eaters it is sure hard to eat the rainbow and sometimes to eat even 5 freggies a day, but I'm going to try.

Too bad chocolate isn't a freggie.

Oh good, so then I did get my rainbow in. I eat the red seedless grapes so couldn't count grapes for my purple.

I'm pretty good on getting 5, but I have to have it preplanned out or I don't get them all in. 6 doesn't seem like that much more, but it is a whole serving more of calories. I got my purple from grapes. Good luck on your tracking this weekend!

I have wonderful news for you, I found a list of food colors and they put figs on the purple color list!

Shannon, this is part of a challenge for my BLC team. I usually can never eat the rainbow. I believe the colors they mentioned in the challenge was to eat: Red-Orange-yellow-green-blue/purple (they combined those two). They don't have anything for the I or the V, though.

I guess it is a healthy thing to do, I rarely get the 'eat 5 freggies', but for this challenge, we have to eat 6 freggies a day.

If you like freggies, you'll like this kind of challenge, even if you just did it for yourself.

I have never heard of eating the colors of the rainbow, but what I neat thought! Do you do this everyday? It is something I will think about. I even remember how my science teacher taught us the colors of the rainbow in science class, way back when I was in 7th grade. ROY G BIV...... Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet.... So what is Indigo anyway???? Oh well!!!! Take care Girlfriend!!! HUGS!! Shannon

Today was a busy day, in and out most of day. Company called to see if we want to play cards. When their son is in town they usually come every evening.

I only got my 20 min of exercise to keep in the BLC streak. That's terrible. I need to get at least 43 min a day to get my 300 min, although I only pledged 200 min.

I didn't track again today. I did lose a few ounces since last week's weigh in.

You did something. 20 mins is good. Definitely better than nothing. Remember those days/evenings when you didn't do anything? You kept it moving and did something for you. emoticon

What's a wife to do?

Wednesday, September 21, 2011

What is it with people who won't go to the doctor unless forced to? I've been after my husband to go to the dermatologist for about a year. His mom and two sisters have had skin cancer. He has worked out in the sun for years, because of his job and he didn't use sunscreen. I've got him to use it now.

I had a pre-cancerous mole that was found by the doctor. I just wonder what would have happened if I hadn't been going for checkups.

Now he says he doesn't want to make the appt until he goes in for the paperwork. If I can get the car, I'll get it myself, then what excuse will he make?

He has a full plate of responsibility with the family so I'm sure he doesn't want to be one of the casualties to be doctored. I try all kinds of scenarios, like "what's the family going to do if you have to be going through treatment?"

What is going on in his mind? He keeps telling me that he'll make the appt. I don't want to do it as it will just make for more hassle.

Ugh! What's a wife to do?

I wish I had some advice but I am sorry I don't!! I am married to a bullheaded man too, and I finally got to the point that I am tired of sounding like a broken record, and he complains I am a nag, so what do you do???? I pray that he listens to you, and gets it checked out. If he LOVES YOU he will!!!

Erin, I told my husband, I knew he wouldn't say anything, but at least it will give him something to think about. So sorry to hear what your husband has to go through.

It isn't a guy thing though. Same thing happened to my SIL, she felt a lump under her arm, about a year later she went to the doctor...stage 4. Then she didn't go back to doctor after her remission, now she is going through her hell with the new cancer. It's in her bones now. Evidentally, she was really in remission, but since she didnd't go back, we didn't know the aches and pains she had was cancer.

But, I think it is mostly a man thing like you said Erin. Most females will get checked out, except my inlaws that is.

I noticed that my husband's head looked like it was on crooked a year ago last June. He said there was nothing wrong with it. By Dec. he couldn't straighten it out at all and finally went to the Dr. He had a tumor the size of a baseball in his neck. Stage 4+ cancer. He went through hell for 8 months. He will most likely never be able to swallow solid food again and has a feeding tube directly into his stomach. Tell your husband about this. And the chemo from the first cancer caused a second cancer that we haven't even started treating yet. And all because he wouldn't go to the Dr. It's a guy thing.

Jim already has a family history of skin cancer, his two sisters and his mom. The doctor had to go down 4 layers to get all the cancer and she had to have plastic surgery. Which is why I'm so up to get him to go before he has to go through any Melanoma. If I leave it up to him, he'll never go.

But, I did get him to make the appt today. Can't get in until January! I told him I only hope he doesn't have anything serious going on before that. I didn't even know I had the pre-cancerous mole until the doc told me. I couldn't even see the mole as it was in a spot by my shoulder blade.

We've had people in the family just put off, whether from fear or what, but when stage 4 cancer is diagnosed, that freaks me to get everyone keeping their appts.

I feel your frustration!! We had a similar situation. My husband - who is nearing 50 years old, overweight, with a family history of young heart attacks - hadn't been to the doctor for 20 years!!

After years of my "asking nicely," he finally agreed to go.

It's been about a month. Fortunately, he got a pretty clean bill of health. Unfortunately, the Doc gave him a slew of follow up appointments. He's spent the past month going to the lab for multiple blood tests, the dermatologist, the gp, the sports medicine doc, the physical therapist, etc... etc... He's been struggling to manage work and his new part-time job, Dr's appointments.

We talked about it the other day and he said that was one of the reasons he'd been hesitant to go to the Doctor.

This might be one of the reasons that your husband is reluctant. Maybe you and he can work out a plan where he can address whatever the Dr. discovers on his own time, such as addressing any urgent concerns immediately and giving himself some time to take care of the later concerns.

I know how hard this is. You are not alone. Good luck!

Guys seem to do everything on their own schedule - when he's ready it will move to the top of his list of priorities and it will get done. Until then, leave it be - he'll get there. I found nagging only move it down the list..

I think this is another Wife's Lament, very common. A couple of years ago I thought my husband was having a stroke; he was staggering and talking in gibberish. He finally told me to leave him alone and stop criticizing him. When he fell, unable to move his right side, I called 911 (can't contradict that) and found out that he had just had his second stroke, and they started him on medication. What is it with men??? He thinks any implication of a physical problem is a reflection of a moral failing.

I'm kind of doing that too. I wanat to buy a tree limb cutter with some of my birthday money. I said I'm not buyng it until he at least calls for an appt. Otherwise, I'll get on the ladder and cut them down with clippers. I did cut some small ones off, but I don't think he heardd me mention it.

BTDT - I had a similar situation a few years back w/spouse - he agreed to have a mole checked if ..... and I still shudder over this ...... I VOTED in a major election - now mind you, this was a HUGE thing for me as I am EXTREMELY non-political - hate politics with a purple passion - have never declared a party - the thought of politics almost makes me sick to the stomach.......

He has improved somewhat wrt doctor visits, though there are some issues that he won't address (and frankly, in those cases I tend to agree - at least for now)......

Sorry I don't have advice to give, but the least I can do is send you some support......

Nims, I used to watch a western a long time ago called 'Sugarfoot'. Will Hutchins was in it. Sure, pick a name and you can be an honorary member. I'm Small Feather.
