Busy St. Patty's Day.

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

My mother arrived safely yesterday, even though the bus was 45 min. late due to a traffic jam on the interstate.

Today we'll be going to sign the lease, etc. and perhaps pick up a few things for hew new apartment (shelving for the bathroom, curtains, etc.) and get her set up with a phone, etc.

It will be a couple of weeks before my sons can get her moved here, but she has some packing to do in that time anyway.

I woke up this morning weighing LESS than yesterday, so my focus on not abandoning my eating plan while she's here is working. Of course, I'm celebrating St. Patrick's day with Joe and his famous Reuben sandwiches tonight, so I'm not out of the danger zone yet, lol.

Yesterday was cold and rainy, but today promises to be warmer and sunny, which will make all the errands with Mother much more fun.

Don't forget to wear the GREEN today, for St. Patty! (I'm Italian, but oh well)

I hope your St. Patty's day went well! Sounds like you are one busy lady. I love reubens too! I actually made a small corned beef roast in the crockpot yesterday. I put cut up potatoes on the bottom. No cabbage - just water to cover the potatoes and then added the corn beef. It came packaged with seasonings. It cooked for 8 hours and was marvelous!

Karen I am so glad things are doing so well! I LOVE Reubens! It is what I order all the time when out but I have them substitute turkey for the corned beef and leave the Thousand Island in the kitchen! The swiss makes it more than gooey enough! I have at least one a week when we go to town!
Have a great time with your mother!

Lifestyle change.

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

I'm having my hair trimmed today. It grows like a weed. Really fast.

My mother is coming in this evening. She insisted on riding the bus from Conroe. It will take her all day to get here, but my mother LOVES to travel, no matter where, how far, how close, or by what means. She just wants to GO. Being 87 yrs. old has not changed that at all for her.

Last time she was here, I gained weight! Not this time. I'm making progress and am determined not to lose it. So I have definitely planned our meals.

At 9 am tomorrow morning, we'll go to her new apartment and sign the lease, pay the deposit, rent, etc. It's a ground floor unit, front and back porch/patio, huge oak trees and faces a little park that the units are built around. Perfect for her. About 15 min. from my house. Perfect for me. Sure beats a 4 hr. drive each way.

My life is going to change now that she's here. I've promised her that Mon - Thurs, my mornings are hers. I'll take her to Wal-mart, grocery store, shopping, doctors, whatever.

She's going to be about a half a block from the Senior Citizen center and the same distance from another community center, which should keep her social and happy, since she can't drive anymore. I'll take her wherever else she needs to go. And to a movie and out to lunch a couple of times a month.

I think she and I were both wary about this move, but I feel that if I meet it head on with a positive plan, it will be a happy circumstance for us both.

Sounds like a great plan, Karen, and I feel very positive that it'll work out well for both of you. My mom and I bought a house together a couple months ago. After only seeing her a couple of times a year, it's certainly different. My mom's only 78, and still very active and drives and such. So her independence isn't an issue. She's turned out to be an awesome housemate, and I cherish this time we have together.

Hugs and good luck to both of you!!!

When it rains, it POURS!

Monday, March 15, 2010

OR - they all wait then come in a bus. That's what I used to say at work when it was quiet all day then at 4:30 twelve people walked in needing something right away, lol.

I just spent a load of cash for new hardwood flooring. Now one of my toilets needs to be taken out to replace a broken flange. AND I just paid for some landscaping, fertilizing, mowing, only to find I also need the pest control people to spray the foundation and yard.

I'm leaking $$$$. AND, suddenly there's a unit available for my mother, who has been waiting to move here from Conroe, about 4 hours away. I'll have to get her, take her there to fill out the lease, etc. and pay the first month's rent and deposit. She'll need a few things for her new apartment, don't we always when we move? I'm footing the bill for this too.

How can you go from very comfortable and right on your financial plan/budget, to suddenly spending all your available cash in one week!

It's the way things happen, I know. Hopefully, none of my applicances will go out this week!

Spring Forward!

Saturday, March 13, 2010

Daylight saving time begins at 2 a.m. ET Sunday, so donít forget to set your clocks ahead by an hour before you go to bed Saturday night!

What do you think about Daylight Savings Time? Is there really any benefit from it? Would you rather do without it?

I live in Wisconsin and it is dark in winter - so working from "can't see to can't see" as my friend says may mean from 7:15 a.m. to 4 :15 p.m. This week it's been light about 6 a.m. and still light at 6 p.m. So tonight is daylight savings and it seems too soon. Twelve hours of light and twelve of dark seems fine for March. But no one asked me.

Internet Safety!

Saturday, March 06, 2010

My 11 year old granddaughter now has her own laptop and email account. I sent her an email on Internet Safety, and it occurred to me that EVERYONE could use a reminder on that subject.

Working so many years in the criminal justice system has made me always see a darker side, I suppose, or maybe it's just made me more aware of reality, hmmm?

Anyway, there are two major things you should be aware of when sending emails. (Fortunately, you don't have to worry about either of them if you use SparkMail!)

Hopefully, your email address does NOT contain your FULL NAME. Even if it doesn't, your full name may well show up on all the emails you send, IF you have it in your computer! Usually when you first set up a computer, there is a place where you enter your name. THAT name is going to show up when you least expect it. I always use Karen L. and that's how my name shows up on emails I send.

NEVER give your FULL NAME away unless you are at a secure site such as a banking site or a shopping site. Those places will show a small lock in the address bar to show they are secure.

So check with your friends, or send yourself an email to another account and see if it has your full name on it. If so, do some investigating into your PC and change it!

Go to CONTROL PANEL, USER ACCOUNTS, CHANGE AN ACCOUNT, click on your name, and there's an option to CHANGE MY NAME. Use the initial of your last name, instead of your full name.

FORWARDS. Here is where most people overlook what they are really doing when they forward something to all their friends. They are sending all the email addresses on that forward out to the whole wide world! You send a forward to 10 people, who send it on to 10 more, and on and on an on. Eventually your email address is spread over the world and you'll be getting more SPAM down the road.

Sooner or later you'll get some with a virus attached. Or you'll get some emails you'd really rather not read. Once someone took my email address and used it to send spam. So all the poor spammed people thought it came from ME! My internet provider shut me down for sending tons of email spam! Took a while to figure it out and get it fixed.

So, when you SEND A FORWARD, before you HIT SEND, look at the top of the message part and you'll see all the email addresses it's already been sent to. DELETE THEM before you send your forward. You'll be doing everyone a big favor, protecting your friends, and NOT helping spammers and untold other crooks out there just waiting for more victims!

Kren

Thanks so much for posting this, Karen. I already do these things but it irritates me so much when someone I send to sends out to a "group" email and I see my email on there (if I sent it to them first and they just forward it back out) and I have stopped sending emails at all to those people.

Report Inappropriate Comment
SERENITYSEL 3/7/2010 10:42AM

I agree. I have my name listed as Sharon Serenity, never do I use my real last name, I also do not just forward emails, and I have asked all my contacts not to forward me emails. Instead I offered something similiar to your suggestion.

When you want to forward an email, copy the portion you want to send, eliminating all the previous email addresses. Then send a message to your own account, and bcc all the contacts you want to send to. Then simply paste the message and send. No one knows who else got the message, no danger of anyone getting all your friends/contacts/family emails.

Thanks for the tip, but I guess I think like you do. After opening an attachment a live "friend" sent me back in 2000, my computer crashed. I lost a lot of things from that, and now I don't open anything from anyone I don't know and I will not open any attachment unless I first scan it for a virus. Sharon
