Earth Day

Saturday, April 26, 2008

I had a busy week and didn't get my Earth Day blog done earlier, but this procrastination has allowed me to ponder a while as to what I do and what I can do for the earth.
I LOVE going out for walks in the woods. I hate it when I see trash all over the place. I always wonder "they had a way to carry that trash in, why don't they carry it out"? My daughter and I are starting little trash walks. We will go for a small walk and pick up some trash along the way.
We have the new light bulbs in our house (can't remember what they are called)
I hang my clothes on the line all summer.
I try to plan my trips into town to do all my errands in one trip.
I take short cool showers. (I am usually trying to cool off after my workout)
I wash and rinse my clothes in cold water.
Things we plan to do
Outside wood burner
Windmill power (my DH is WAY into this, he thinks it is soooooo cool)
Take a coffee cup to work and use that instead of styrofoam.
Take a water bottle to work and use it.
leave the AC off as much as possible this year.
I would love to find a friend to ride share into work with me, but no one wants to work out before work... grrrr...

    Sounds like a plan, Mary!
I hate trash also on the trails, roadsides, in the yards, etc. We also use those lightbulbs you were talking about.

emoticonThose trash walks sound awesome. I wonder also about folks that just throw trash on the ground and keep walking. Who does that? What is going through their mind? Are they even thinking? Sure sometimes trash falls out of someones bag but how often is that the case?

Spring is time to start again!

Sunday, March 30, 2008

Spring is on the way and I am ready and waiting!!!! I am writing down 10 "Spring Cleaning" quests for my life

1. Finish a half marathon
2. Set up a new fitness goal.
3. Get back to 5 fruits or veggies a day!!!
4. Start losing again.
5. Spend more "mom and me" time with my daughter.
6. Eat at home 3-4x's a week.
7. Manage my checkbook better.
8. Spend more times with my friends.
9. Have at least one (extended) family meal a month
10. Remember to enjoy myself and have fun with friends, myself and family

These are just 10 things that I need to remember to do and work on. Life gets so busy and hectic that I often get lost in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. You know, thinking that as soon as I get ..... done. I will do things different. Well one thing leads to another and I forget to do the things that are fun. I want to have a fun Spring!

#7, can you do that one for me too? I keep telling my husband that pregnancy has caused me to have no will power but one of these days, he might figure out its actually just me using the belly as an excuse. Love the Spring Resolutions... much success with them.

Okay so I have to confess! When I first joined a new team challenge "happy losers". Part of the set up was posting 50 positive affirmations. I HATED it!!!! I rolled my eyes and it took me forever to think of 50 nice to say about myself that didn't seem, ummm, corney. Then, later another challenge to add ten affirmations a week! HOLY COW!!! It was hard enough with 50. I started searching the web for some ideas. That was when it hit me. It isn't just about saying "I'm a good mom". It was about the other stuff, the things we forget. The words that we needed to be reminded of. Now I look forward to my 10 affirmations challenge. I know I need to be reminded of what I have the strength to do. Here are a few of my affirmations:

1. I believe I can lose weight.
2. I believe I am worth the time I spend on a heathier me.
3. I do not give up easily
4. I am going to beat the “my whole family is fat, its in my genes” comments
5. I want a change in my life
6. I Love being active
7. I am the first person out of bed each morning.
8. I think of others and their feelings
9. I'm a courageous fighter who is all heart.
10. I am strudy and steady which gives me power and control.
11. I have the drive and the discipline to master any art form I desire, no matter how long it takes.
12. I am a force to be reckoned with.
14. I am willing to learn new things
15. I will use the new knowlegde

My favorite is 13, when I have bad days, when my scale sticks, when I feel like I just can't take one more step while jogging.... I think of number 13.

I'm afraid all of my affirmations are corny. My husband has heard me reading them out loud to myself and the first few times looked at me like, "?o.k.??? strange weight loss team stuff.... got it..." Now I think it is causing him to want to compliment me to encourage the whole "feeling better about myself" thing. We all do need a good old fashioned self-brain washing. It is good to sit there and review ourselves and know who we really are inside and that we should be proud of who we are.

What did you do to your hair!!!!

Saturday, November 03, 2007

Well.... last weekend I decided I was due for a change. I went to my local Target and bought some brown hair dye (I'm a first timer for home hair dye, well, shoot, any hair dye). I was really excited about my new look. I looked in the mirror and... HOLY CRAP!!!! Crayon RED!!!! It was awful!!!! I spent the rest of the morning looking for a place open to fix my hair, it was not right. Anyway... I found a place to "tone down" my hair, to acceptable.
The funny thing is... the comments I have gotten about my hair. Many, many of my friends, family and coworkers have told me how much thinner my new hair makes me look. It isn't my new hair! I am thinner!
I was sooo worried about my fat looks before. Thinking how much happier I would be if I was just 5 pounds, 10 pounds, etc thinner. Worried that everyone that looked at me just saw this fat person. How much time and energy I wasted worrying about how others saw me. I wasted my stress!!!! They don't care half as much as I do. I learned at the beginning of my weight loss journey that I need to do this for me, not anyone else and this week just reminded me why.
P.S. The pic, is a toned down red, I was way to distraught to even think of taking a pic of the crayon red. It was traumatizing!

I am so jealous. I try everything to get that color but mine stays kind of brown. My daughter has bright red hair and I am so envious. It looks great. I like you with the color.

What you might try for your hair, grab Garnier Fructis Curl shampoo, Curl Conditioner, and then the Curl & Shine Leave in Conditioning Cream. While in the shower, wash with the shampoo then take a broad toothed comb and take the Curl Conditioner through your hair. After you get out of the shower, towel dry and then maybe even just do other things and then when the hair is still damp but isn't dripping... take the Garnier Fructis Curl & Shine Leave In Conditioning Cream through your hair but not with a comb, just with your fingers. Focus on the ends if you are like most of us because the ends are what like to frizz up and get breakage. Then when it dries, try to only use a pick for your hair so you don't end up causing it to frizz. That may be all you need to do to bring out some natural curl in your hair. PS Congrats on the pants falling off!

Straightening products that I have around the house: EASYSTRAIGHT Flat Iron Finish Super Straight Styler (no flat iron required). JOHN FRIEDA COLLECTION FRIZZ-EASE Straight Answer Straightening Spray, FREEMAN SEAKELP Smoothing Shampoo and Smoothing Conditioner. If you buy the correct products and use them long enough, it reduces the need to apply heat to the hair to get it straight... but it does take a while of using the products for the hair to get trained that way. I've done it before. Then I started using curly-hair products for the past year and now am switching back to the straightening products. Not all brands carry them. And the reason I have such a modge podge of different brands is because I grabbed a bunch on sale this week from different places because soon I switch back to the straightening formulas so I am stocking up on those now.

Your hair looks great! I had a hair disaster once too, luckily I was in college and could pull it off as having been done on purpose. My mom sure was "surprised" when I came home for the holidays though!

You are so right. No one is as concerned about what you look like as you. We are our own worst critics. But hey, no matter the reason they were noticing that you looked thinner, it's nice to hear that from people isn't it? :o) Have a good week!

I want mine to be crayon red but Lucy the girl that does my hair was like, "Lets go for this color as it will look more professionals and I do charge you a lot of money so we wouldn't want to turn you out looking bad." One of the other girls in the salon kept telling Lucy to tone mine down with more of a copper look, probably about what yours is now. And I was like cringing and Lucy was like, "She likes vibrant colors." After taking the pic, that is when i realized how the red makes the green pop. You are looking good sporting your new hair color. Your hair in that pic looks like you too carry the Curly Haired gene. When you go to get shampoo and conditioner, look at the different types and get the ones that say for Curls or Curly hair. Just shampoo and conditioner alone of the correct type might cause your hair to get those awesome curls. I have to do the opposite because mine has had curls for too long and they are starting to look ratty to me so now I am switching to straighter hair for a while.

Oh no, being a long time hair colorer, I feel your pain and what happened when you colored it. What I am wondering is how in the world you ended up with red hair when you used brown. So glad you found someone to tone it down. The color looks good on you. You are so right about doing this healthy/losing weight for ourselves. I believe thats how we will be get the most success. Thanks for the comment on my blog!

Trying to stay positive

Saturday, October 20, 2007

Well I have some good news! My scale that had a stubborn streak going finally decided to stop torturing me. I stepped on it this morning and it finally moved. It had come to a slow stop since the beginning of October.
Being focused on the numbers on the scale and not seeing them move forced me to look elsewhere to see progress. I had to think about things I can do now that couldn't a month ago.

1. climb the stairs without getting winded
2. run a mile (I'm not breaking any land speed records but I did it)
3. wear a smaller size scrub pants
4. lift heavier weights
5. I have A LOT more endurance
6. I have more energy (no more afternoon slumps)
7. I drink a lot less caffine. (see number 6)
8 I am stronger
9. I can walk over 5 miles
10. I can do over 160 strides a minute on the elipitical machine
11. I have stopped avoiding mirrors, well I don't linger but, I will at least look.

I am still working on a few things. I really want to finish three miles in 40 minutes. I not close yet, but I think I can do it!

I know you can do it MARY, You have the right attitude and if you stick to it you will continue to see results. Good for you that you have stopped looking only at the scale. There are many things that change when we change our habits. It's good to see that you discovered that.

Congratulations!! Wilma

And didn't you just win Sparks Happy Losers, Team 1's Biggest Loser for the week, with a loss of 2.4 lbs? Way to go!!! What a good idea....when you can't see improvement on the scale make a list of all the places you can see improvement. That's an great idea. And you have an awesome list. I feel motivated by it. Thank you!! Christine

It really does feel good when we can do things that we couldn't do before. Congrat on the scale finally being reasonable. I'll bet you are turning it in to muscle is what you are doing.
