Apple Tasting

Saturday, October 11, 2008

So I went to an apple tasting today! It was pretty fun. I got to try a ton of different varities of apples. I found some ones that were amazingly yummy, and some that were just NOT my cup of tea.

Speaking of tea, I tried some green tea yesterday for the first time. It was lemongrass flavored and basically tasted like hot lemon water. I was extremely unimpressed. I also tried coffee again, which I know I don't like, but I really wanted to try some new things. So I got a skinny latte with sugar-free caramel in it. But all I could taste was the coffee. As usual, my coffee-loving friend could only taste the caramel. So I let her drink it! I kept trying it and hoping it would taste good. Not so much!

Anyway, the apple tasting is at the Portland Nursery for anyone who lives in town. It's today and tomorrow from 10-5 and it's also next weekend, same time. It's free to get in. They also have free popcorn, which didn't look appealing. But I did try some apple strudel. BEST APPLE STRUDEL EVER. Diet-friendly? Definitely not. But worth the taste!

I learned what my favorite kind of apple is (Ambrosia) and I learned that apparently it's popular! When we got to the barrels where you can buy the different varities, they were already out and we were there in the morning! They had some at the store later, but it was almost triple the price! They were good....but not that good!

Anyone else done anything fun lately?

I went to the mall last night and looked for a new Bathroom Scale since I have NOT gotten one this past year, but just weigh at the gym. SO, my sons said they will buy it for me for my birthday. It is a Homedic that has a digital display, but not all the other stuff. I don't need it to do everything including GROAN when I step on it!! emoticon

Nothing fun so far for me, Amber. But i let Robert read your blog and we will head to the portland nursery maybe tomorrow. Sounds like fun.

As for green tea, you might try the Celestial Seasonings Green tea. It is not the most pleasant tasting but it does help speed up the metabolism system for weight loss. It does for me, anyways.

I'm glad you enjoyed your Aple tasting.

Thin is the New Happy

Thursday, October 09, 2008

So I just got done reading this book Thin is the New Happy by Valerie Frankel.

Oh my goodness, it was so good! If you can find it, you should definitely give it a read. It's about her life as a chronic dieter and coming to terms with accepting herself AND her body.

One excerpt "You have to love your body as a living organism, not hate it as a flawed decorative statue. Only a fool or a child would put a premium on pretty over healthy...My bad body image, a vestige of the past, was now history. My future would be devoted to strength--of character and muscle. My new role-model was that iron-pumping grandma with the fingerless gloves and the frosted blond hair. When the body image demons rattled the cage, as they surely would from time to time, Id' think of her and remember that I had only one body, and one choice. To love it--or leave it. I wanted to stay around long enough to see my daughters' daughters take a big bite out of a cookie and smile with unmitigated pleasure."

I love books that truly speak to me as a person and make me feel good about myself. What have you been reading lately?

"Shrink Yourself" by ROGER GOULD, M.D. on how to stop the yo-yo cycle of weight loss and gaining it back because of stress.

95% of people regain the weight they lose, so Dr. Gould has an answer for not letting that happen.

Wow... what a powerful statement! "You have to love your body as a living organism, not hate it as a flawed decorative statue."

The books sounds amazing, I'll have to check it out! Oh of course I like books that make you feel good about yourself, I could sure use and ego boost ;)

Thanks for sharing!

Clinical Study : Anxiety

Thursday, October 02, 2008

I mentioned that I was going to write a blog about this, so here it is!

I am participating in a clinical study for anxiety. So right now I'm either taking an anti-anxiety medication, or I'm on the placebo. The only bummer of which is that I think it's making me retain water. My weight has gone up slightly for no good reason and (don't read this if you don't want to know: my BMs have been super hard!) I've even been drinking extra water (16-18 cups instead of my usual 12-14)

I get to talk to a doctor each week, so that's been interesting. I got a free physical. They also took my blood and tested me for a bunch of things I've been wondering about. The good news : according to all of the tests I'm perfectly healthy except for having abnormally low blood pressure. The bad news : So I have no idea what's wrong with me then! If I'm perfectly healthy, why do i get lightheaded whenever I stand up, feel fatigued ALL the time, and haven't had TOM visit since the end of March? I don't know, but they determined that I'm still healthy enough to do the study, so it can't be anything too huge right?

I'll be participating in this study for the next three months and hopefully these pills will help me!

If you have low-blood pressure, that can cause light-headedness and even fatigue. I have lower blood pressure, and get dizzy when I stand up quickly.

As for the TOM thing, if you have lost quite a bit of weight since then, it could be affected. If you were osing more than 5-6 pounds per month, your body may be protecting itself by stopping things. And if you exercise quite a bit, that can stop it also.

Good luck, Liz

amber , any Dr. should of told you that the lightheadedness is due to low blood pressure, my dr. said to keep track of your sodium and you may actually be low in sod. or potassium since you drink so much water , you may be flushing your system of important vits and minerals , whew your darned if you do and darned if you dont!!!

Very interesting, Amber. Don't be threatened by your low blood pressure. You might look into taking a 500 mi cinnamon capsule. Cinnamon regulates blood pressure. it helps mine tremendously.

Good luck on your next tests.

When you have STRESS, it will affect all areas of your body. I'm glad you are in the study and getting attention. YOU will help them, I'm sure. emoticon

the lightheadedness and fatigue are likely due to the low blood pressure. My sister has it and it sometimes causes her to pass out without warning. TOM issues may be realated to that as well. Typically if something is wrong with the body-Aunt flo is one of the first things to get messed up.

hope you feel better soon!

Dreyer's (or Edy's) Limited Edition : Apple Pie

Thursday, October 02, 2008

I had previously tried their peppermint flavor, which only stays around for a limited time. It tastes just like a peppermint candy!

But what I'm truly amazed with is the apple pie flavor. Oh my gosh, it's just like eating apple pie ala mode! It's light vanilla ice cream with chunks of apple and pie crust. At 120 calories per half cup, it easily slides into my day as a great treat.

I have tried almost every single kind of Dreyer's Slow Churned Ice Creams (known as Edy's when to travel to the east). This apple pie flavor is one of the best! It's a bummer that it only comes around for the holiday season!

They also have frozen yogurt, no sugar added, and fat free options! If you like ice cream and don't mind the serving size, check it out!

    Ooooh, that sounds good!
Last year I had some of the limited edition Pumpkin Pie Slow Churned ice cream; really yummy with a bit of fat free Cool Whip!
Which reminds me, I have to start looking for that in the store again!

Amber Tried It : Wendy's Chili

Sunday, September 28, 2008

Ok, so my plan today was to try something new. I sometimes get a hankering for fast food, but I get bummed when I do because it's often a lot of calories for something that really isn't filling.

Well I heard that the chili at Wendy's is really good, so I decided to check it out! However, what people neglected to mention is that it isn't chili at all. It's soup! They can call it chili, but sadly, no. It is soup. It's thinner than my campbell's select harvest minestrone soup! If you're thinner than something that calls itself soup, you also are soup!

Other than the total texture mix-up, it wasn't too bad. I only ate the beans out of it because I'm not a fan of meat in my chili. So if you like meat and beans in your soup (NOT chili) then you'll probably like it. A small is a decent size and it's only 190 calories. I'm not sure how big the large is, but I'm sure it's big! It's 280 calories. They are both packed with protein and fiber and I've heard taste really good when poured over the side salad instead of dressing.

When I ate meat, I enjoyed the Chili over a salad. It wasn't too bad.... you'd have to drain the extra water though :)

WOW, you must have a "bad" Wendy's because the one I go to here in Pensacola has THICK Chili, and it isn't "soup" at all. Stick a spoon in it and it will stand up straight.

I'd complain to the Manager! emoticon

I haven't had the Wendy's chili in a long time, but I agree with you, it is more like a soup.

I myself like chili you can eat with a fork.
