California Dutchman's Pipe is a deciduous vine with one inch purple striped pipe-shaped flowers. Pipe vine likes part-shade and regular water. This California native vine is fairly drought tolerant once it becomes established. This grows in shade in the central Sierras in moist places and the associated plants are Tellima, Heuchera micrantha and Umbellularia californica. It will carpet the ground and grow into the trees if it is happy. Larva of Pipe-vine Swallowtail (Battus philenor) live on this plant.
