I'm not typically a desert fan, either, but this part of the Chilean desert is right off the Pacific coast, so it was pretty temperate. Plus, so different from the landscape I'm used to (I'm from the Midwest), so I found it to be breathtaking!
I hope you do have a chance to get to Chile some day - it is such a beautiful country.

Not a desert fan...Ecuador is in a condition of 90% erosion and will look like this in the foreseeable future.
