    To your husband's sore calf: why is it that he only can exercise at 10% incline? Of course It will get sore (try it for just 10 minutes).
    While I was on the other side of 200lbs I also used the incline feature to get tired because I wanted to avoid running and injury, but 5% incline at 7 km/h speed was enough then. At 10% incline he can even get injured. I think he should not do it.
    45 minutes of walking 5 times a week should be plenty of cardio for him, he could start strength training as well.
    Healthy diet is the most part of weight loss.
