I do plan my meals ahead of time. Usually a week or two. I put them on my computer and then every Sunday I write them out on a dry erase board that I have on my refrigerator. It really helps me to keep variety as well as not have to fly by the seat of my pants, that usually leads to not so good choices. However if I don't feel like what I have planned I just make something else.
