I think it might help you to know this: I tried the elliptical for the first time about a month ago. I hopped on and tried moving on it for about fifteen seconds, then got right off; it felt so awful to me! I hated that I couldn't lock my knees. I just couldn't believe how people could do that for hours at a time!
But a week and a half ago, I decided to try it again, after getting confirmation from people here at SP that it just takes a little time to get used to, and that they all felt very weird and uncomfortable on it when they started. And the number of calories that you could burn on it really attracted me.
So, day one -- last Friday -- I could only do two minutes at a time before I needed a break. It felt awful to not be able to lock my knees; it meant that I was basically putting all my weight on my thighs as I moved. But I kept at it.
A week and a half later, I can now go an hour on it without feeling the need to stop! I love it now. It doesn't hurt my legs as much as other exercises, now that my thighs have gotten used to the motion and the weight; and the calories I burn each day (considering the amount of time I put in) are through the roof!
Your stamina on that thing improves so incredibly quickly. Just give it five days of determined attempts, and I promise you, you'll find that it's much easier!
