To answer your question about the running thing - honestly just practice, like most things I suppose ;), I actually never ran before 2008 when I did the couch to 5K program. After that I just steadily increased my mileage by about 1M per week. At first it was tough but then soon enough it became easier and I began to actually enjoy it.
