Strong is Beautiful!
My name is Helen and I am 39 years old. I set out on this journey to lose weight September 1st of 2009. I began at 209 lbs and I am 5'2" tall. I have always battled my weight. In high school I hung out around 150 lbs which always had people referring to me as "chubby". I joined the Air Force after school and for 4 years maintained my weight from 135-140 lbs- the maximum for my height. I got married, had kids, and for about 13 years stayed pretty much between 175-209. ...
At the age of 36, I was at a point where I was living a life in constant pain from my feet, knees, and especially my back. I could only sleep 1-2 hours at a time. Every morning I was waking up barely able to move because my back was stiff and very tight. And just as soon as my feet hit the floor, I was in severe pain from plantar fascitis. I could not climb stairs or squat down because of my knees. I had reached my breaking point as I could not fathom living like this any longer. I thought: "What will life be like for me at 46? 56?" Beginning September 1st, 2009, I stayed consistant with eating healthy and exercising and quickly lost 67 lbs in about 9 months. For the next 2 years I battled binge eatng with a vengence. I would get down to 135 lbs, then start binging for days and weeks and sometimes months at a time until I am back up to 155 or so. I could not seem to find a balance. In June of 2012 my husband had the bright idea of signing us up for a family CrossFit gym membership. I was SO mad at him. We have access to two very nice FREE gyms on the military base and I could not fathom spending the money on a gym membership. Wow.... Something happened after about 8 weeks of begrudgingly attending CrossFit off and on. I started to LIKE it.... Here I was giving a half hearted effort and I could see myself getting stronger. What would happen if I gave it 100%??? I started to absolutely LOVE it! It has become a passion.... an addicition.... an obsession. Once I put forth my best effort, my binge eating disorder was curbed and I lost 27 lbs in 3 months! I am currently down to a very healthy 129 lbs (+/- 2) and have been maintaining for 2 months. I love CrossFit! Would love to add as many SparkFriends as I can! I get so much support from this website and I would love to give some out. SparkPeople has been life changing for me. Feel free to add me as a friend and I will reciprocate and we can support each other.
