My name is Marilyn and I just turned 40 years old. I allowed my weight to keep me down for to long. What started as gaining a few pounds due to a back injury led to depression and so much more. I was never "obese" by many people's standards but I was overweight for my 5 ft 3 small boned frame.

My goal was just to be healthy again. This isn't about being a size 4 (although I wouldn't complain about that) it's just about feeling good in my own skin again! At my heaviest I was 176 lbs and today (1/06/14) I am at 143. I'm very proud of that number. I've worked hard to achieve it! I didn't starve myself. I didn't work out ridiculous amounts of time per day. I was realistic. I simply started walking and well, I kept walking, and walking, and walking! I average 6 to 10 miles a day 5 or 6 days a week. I do short jogging sprints along the way as well just to get my heart rate up for a bit.

I stopped eating "bad carbs". You know the white stuff like bread, pizza, white potatoes, etc. I do my very best to shop from the outside of the grocery store aisles where the live food is. While the the farmers markets are open I shop there weekly as well.

My journey isn't over yet. I set my goals in short amounts and when I reach one I evaluate them again and decide where I want to go from there. Currently my weight loss goal is 132. I suspect when I reach that I will want to take off another 4 or 5 pounds and then likely be done. I hope to lose all I want to lose before winter sets in here in the northeast. My next goal will be toning. I dread that to be honest. I've never been a gym rat. I enjoy being in the great outdoors but I will do what I need to do to achieve my goals and feel good in my own skin. I'm on my way. I see a smile when I look in the mirror now!

For anyone that is just getting started all I can suggest is to take this one day at a time. Set small attainable goals. Drink your water! A dehydrated body isn't going to lose weight. Think about what matters to you the most. Is it the snack you want now or the weight loss that can come later? Good luck!
