I am a 57 year old retired RN who was born and raised in the Detroit area. I married my HS sweethart in 1974 after graduation from nursing school. I began struggling with weight when I turned 15 and my clothes were getting tight. I had gained 15 lbs without any idea what happened and that began my struggle. The older I got, the more difficult it became. The weight was like glue! I had 2 girls-one in 1980 and the second one in 1983. Our second child showed up with a surprise-she was a trisomy 21 child-Down's syndrome. Not the kind of surprise we were anticipating! In between that time-my husband and I were transfered to Atlanta, GA which was a good opportunity for us for many reasons.
After each pregnancy, the weight continued to creep up and was almost impossible to budge with diets of any kind. I had always been pretty active and athletic but as I got heavier it got harder to move around. I noticed alot of joint aching and began having problems with low back pain after the girls were born. Little did I know I was developing degenerative disc disease which was going to get progressive as I aged. On and off diets again and again with little progress and alot of hunger caused me to finally stop the yo-yo madness in 1995 and just eat healthy, balanced and in moderation. I didn't lose but I also didn't gain for many yrs. It left me a size 18-20. I just couldn't struggle anymore. Then-when I turned 46, my BP started to shoot up and a few months later I found out my thyroid wasn't working. Now I know why my weight has been such an issue. I have this feeling the thyroid hasn't been working right for years but has finally showed up in the labs. SO-here I am with Spark People and learning ALOT about many things especially thyroid and ready to get healthier than ever!

Fitness Minutes: 64

My Goals:
Goals are to ultimately lose 75 lbs. or as much as my body will drop! I need to get the pressure off my joints and back as well as improve the fit of my clothing and decrease my BP! Becoming optimal with my thyroid meds will benefit greatly!

My Program:
Balanced diet-portion controlled- with a high protein breakfast, moderate lunch and dinner. My stiff back has limited my ability to exercise consistantly. I have addressed the chronic muscle/tissue issues in my back, neck and shoulders and the chiropractor has realigned my spine. Sooo much improved that I think I can slowly start to get moving!

Personal Information:
Married since 1974, 2 grown girls-the younger being a Down's Syndrome child, and recently retired from nursing {RN}. My home is a suburb east of Atlanta,GA

Other Information:
Have 2 kitties-Yoda and Sugarpuss. Love animals, gardening and warm, sunny weather so I can swim! My favorite places are the mountains of Western NC or the southern coastal regions on the water. I love to travel when I can.

    hi Wulfie!

Good to see you are back, sorry to hear about your dad and mom. Death is very hard, particularly when its a spouse that you have shared the majority of your life with. So my sympathies are with your Mom as well.

    I'm glad Springtime is here.
Everything blooming. We finally got the rain we needed!
    yay

Hey, there. Thanks so much for the kind comments and befriending. Spark is a bit of a, "home away from home," for me, so it's definitely nice to be back. Love reading your insights and nuggets of wisdom, too! Have a super day.

hey you! i never got a notification that you left me a comment emoticon . i haven't blogged because i just have sooo much on my mind. i know, it would seem i would be blogging more because of that. but it's so much that i just can't sort it all out. i've dropped some of my weight loss teams because it was just demanding too much of me (support wise) and not giving enough in return. so i am not on sparkpeople that much. i check in just to add food and add fitness minutes. i did gain all 25lbs back since july, just so much stress and depression. plus, i believe i definitely need a higher dosage of my thyroid meds.

i finally got a job (in november), but it is only part time. i really need full time for the money (to pay student loans) and insurance. oh well, i'll take what i can get.

    hope you're well!
