Starting Over

My name is Bill. I gained a lot of weight over the past several years taking care of my beautiful wife. Now that she has passed away after a 4-year battle with Amyloidosis, it is time to start taking care of myself. The first year had mixed results, but I'm determined to turn this around. The activity isn't the problem - it's the healthy eating. I will do this, though!

I'm taking part in the Spring 5% Challenge. My goal is to lose 11 pounds during the challenge.

My Goals:
I want to get to 180 lbs by August 2105. While I can't run very much due to tendon damage after a broken leg, I want to continue the habit of exercising daily while eating healthier.

My Program:
Eat healthy, watch the portion sizes, and exercise frequently. This formula always works, but it's easier said than done! I've got to find a way to make them habits instead of things that I HAVE to do.

Personal Information:
I live in San Antonio, Texas - an absolutely great place! (except perhaps in July and August...)

Other Information:
I grew up in Texas, but spent 26 years in the Air Force. After retiring from the Air Force, I worked another 15 years at Brooks AFB, TX as a contractor. I love outdoor activities of all types. I especially like hiking vacations. My son and my 7-year old grandson went with me on a 20-mile hike in the mountains of Wyoming last year.

Hi Bill, Good to 'see' you! No, we were at mile-high altitude in high desert Prescott, so it was not as hot there. Anywhere from 15-20 degrees cooler than the desert floor of Phoenix etc. Even when it got up into the 90's, it would cool down immediately as soon as the sun set, due to the altitude. The sun sets much earlier there, too.

The humidity, for me, is OK- I guess we had humidity in the Seattle area where I'm from, so I'm used to it. (humidity wihout the heat in Seattle though- also much cooler in general there as you'd know, and also cools way down at night).

So it's very wierd (to us) to go across the street after dark to a neighbors for example and get slammed with the heat ls late in the evening. Then, even very early in the morning, it will already be in the 80's working towards the high 90's for later in the day. I hate being trapped inside with the A/C.

We're going up to Maine for a week at the end of September, to check out the Portland area and maybe rent something furnished there for next summer, just the two worst months (Juloy and August).

I know we're wimps LOL. The trade-off for summer here is 9 gorgeous months of a beautiful fall, mild winter, and beautiful spring. So we do like it here very much- just gotta run away for a few months next summer if we can.

Being in Texas you're probably laughing your head off and saying "poor baby"- right?? emoticon emoticon Hope you're setling in with your granddaughter and having a great summer there! emoticon

"Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity."
