I'm back on SparkPeople determined to regain the momentum I had two years ago when I lost a total of 85 pounds and gained amazing fitness. Since then, I've had major upheavals in my personal life, going through a divorce, going back to school, beginning a new career, and falling in love again! Through all that, some of the weight I lost has found me again, especially since I started working nights as a nurse on a busy medical floor! But I know that I can get my groove back if I keep doing what worked for me so well last time: One day at a time! My goal now is to lose 15-20 lbs, and regain my fitness to run a half marathon in 2011. :)

I joined SparkPeople in early October 2007, after hitting an all-time high with my weight. I was so discouraged and felt like I would never lose weight and keep it off. A friend told me about SparkPeople, and her amazing fitness level inspired me that I could do this too. I've had such success because of a few personal rules: first, NO EXCEPTIONS. I haven't given myself a "free pass" for any day, any meal, any "special occasion". That's how I ended up weighing over 200 pounds, and the only way back to health was to stop it. Two, NO EXCUSES. I've been meticulous about my nutrition and forcing myself to exercise at least 4 days a week, no matter what. If I feel crappy, then I just walk. And third, NO LIMITS. I've always lost weight before by setting really small goals for myself, like not being obese. This time, I'm not limiting my goals. I can do better than not being obese! I'm shooting for incredible fitness, for the ability to run, for a size 8. :-) (And I've achieved these things! And more. I'm now a size 4/6!) I've never been an athlete, but my goal for myself for 2008 was to work my way up to running a half-marathon by the end of the year. It was a huge goal for me, but I wasn't going to believe that there's anything I can't do if I decide to do it.
UPDATE: Ran a half-marathon on Sept 21, 2008 in 2:19:39, 11 minutes faster than my goal. :) I loved every second of it, not just finishing. I welled up with tears several times during the race, realizing what I was accomplishing and how far I've come in this last year. It was the very best thing I've ever done for myself, and one of the happiest days of my life.
I lost almost 40 percent of my original weight since starting SP, and decreased my body fat percentage 25 percent!!
Now that I've surpassed my original goal, I'm working to maintain this weight loss and continue to improve my fitness level. I'm planning to continue to set new goals for myself, to keep registering for new races, and keep challenging the limits of what I'm capable of. I'm planning to run the Philadelphia Distance Run in September (a half marathon). For a former fat kid who couldn't run around the track even once in seventh grade (am I the only one with *that* traumatic adolescent memory??), this is so incredibly exciting. I am becoming the woman I've always wanted to be. :) I'm discovering that making these positive changes in my physical life is spilling over into my emotional and spiritual life, and I feel like I'm just beginning the positive transformation of my life. I'm 31 years old, and in some ways feel like I'm embarking on the most exciting part of my life so far.
I'm determined to push myself past the limits I've always set up for myself. I will stop believing the stories I tell myself about what I cannot do, and just begin. And keep beginning.

Run a 5K in the first 2 months of 2008 (ankle permitting).
GOAL ACHIEVED! 1/1/08, 36:50. and another 5K planned for 2/10/08.
New goal: beat my previous 5K time! GOAL ACHIEVED 2/5/08: 33:42!
Run a 5K distance without walking at all: achieved 4/3/08! Yay!
Run a sub-30 minute 5K: ACHIEVED 6/14/08. 29:05

I am a nursing student, and have had the privilege of taking care of some amazing people, some of whom are dying, and some of whom lose their ability to walk along the way. This has brought home to me the truth and urgency in one of my favorite motivational quotes: "There will come a day when you can no longer do this. TODAY IS NOT THAT DAY." I run for myself, in celebration of my health, and in honor of these patients who can no longer run or even walk. I will run for as long as that day is not today.

how do you keep your daily calorie consumption so low? Aren't you starving? Any tricks to curb hunger? I feel like even when I'm trying hard I'm always over 1600...
