Wendy - Low Carb Fan !

I'm Wendy, 54 and live in Leicester, UK. I'm a Christian Spiritualist (religion) and trying to become more spiritually aware of God and his love.
Always tiny as a child (I was 36 inches high at 7, the height of an average 2yr old), As a young woman, I was a size zero 31.5-23-34 and just 4ft 10. At my heaviest, I used to have a BMI of 38.5 (only just under seriously obese) and 46-40-46, now its 24.6.1 and I'm 34-28-35, in size 8 jeans.

My doctor and a dietitian advised me to eat lots of bread, potatoes, pasta and rice but the only weight loss success I have had is by cutting them out and I started losing about 1-2 lbs a week! I keep a variety of fish, lean meat, cheese, veggies and sugar free jellies in, which I make up with frozen berries into small tupperwares and serve with a big dollop of plain pro-bio yogurt. My snacks include mixed unsalted nuts, dried fruit, high fibre flax meal and coconut, both creamed in a solid block and unsweetened for baking. I try not to go more than 3-4 hrs without a small meal and have lots of 10-20 gm snacks. I also make up meals to freeze, using my slowcooker.

My Goals:
I''d like to walk down my street without the local yobbos houting "Hey fat bitch!"
I want to wear slim, pretty clothes again, instead of slopping around in comfy cover ups.

My Program:
I''m trying to follow the Atkins diet combined with the GI (stable blood sugar). I enjoy fruit, salad and veg, so find it hard to keep the carbs low and the cals up but I usually eat very healthy and low fat. I also drink 8-10 beer bottles of chilled water a day and rarely have alcohol : (

Personal Information:
I had angina and a heart attack at 44, due to years of unhappy marriage, being left destitute and homeless by my ex and a 3.5 yr divorce, being a single parent, studying for an Honours Degree (just missed being in the 3% of 1st !), working part-time at Sainsburys supermarket and having to cycle 4-6 miles and walk 2 miles a day. I was diagnosed with acute Hashimoto's Hypothroidism (Myxodema) and I have to take 150mcg Levothyroxine daily and still have metabolism problems. I have since suffered violent ASBO neighbours, 7 stolen and wrecked vehicles, 2 burglaries and being mugged twice because I lost my lovely home in a nice area.

Other Information:
It hurts when other people see me as fat and assume I am a couch potato eating greasy take aways, chips and chocolate, when I only used to eat a small portion of each once a month, I don''t even do that now.
I've have been so depressed about my shape and my 'hypo' symptoms of carpal tunnel, ME. fibromyalgia and early Alheimer's, that I have been anorexic and sometimes had only 300-600 cals a day in my desperate efforts to lose weight .

Hi Wendy,I'm Angie I just started this online thing today,and so far I like what I'm seeing and reading. I was actually trying to start Adkins a little bit today.I dont know alot about it though.I have read some of your posts on it and wondered if you could tell me about the 14 day thing your talking about and what you can exactly eat on it.I know eggs, meats, cheese,but not much else.I did this a couple years ago when my dad did it but i just kinda made up my own rules like, i ate the foods I wrote above but i also did eat fruit and yogurt too it did seem to work but since then i have had twins and need to loose about 40 lbs of belly and thigh weight. If you can help I would be very greatful.

Hey Wendy,

Thanks for your comments on my page. I appreciate the encouragement. Actually, I have been living here in Egypt for the past 5 years and enjoy it thoroughly. I am teaching History at a school here and it is wonderful to do it in a land so full of history. When we came here five years ago it was not only to teach but also to learn. Being in a different country, other than your own, can also have its difficulties also. A cruise down the Nile River is definitely a wonderful experience. The sunsets are wonderful, but also getting to see so many of the things that have not changed in centuries. I have enjoyed genealogy for years (thanks to my grandmother). She is the one who passed on old family documents, bibles and details she had placed in writing for my family to pass on.

Hi Wendy,

Thanks for your response to my e mail and good advice re: low carb eating. I have read your page with great interest and being short and hypo-thyroid as well, my life experience is very similar to yours. When I began here at SP, my measurements and BMI pretty well mirrored yours, so you are an inspiration for me now, to get down to where you are! I got a calorie counter for our trip BUT realize I ought to also have a carb counter....so will have to get one. I found out that breads are not for me either, and have learned to substitue flour/sugar foods with the nuts and flax and other things one can use. Thanks for the coconut tip...I will get the unsweetened kind I saw at the store.
