I am a recently retired 63 year old who is looking to lose weight despite some health issues. I live in the Pacific Northwest, but back and leg problems have in the past kept me from getting out and enjoying our beautiful walkways. I can walk shorter distances, and with practice may get much better at that.

I am 6'4" and now, 286 lbs. I would like to lose 61 lbs more.

I believe in eating for taste and for health. That is why my wife and I eat a variety of Mediterranean foods. It is one of the better diets for heart health, diabetes prevention, and lower inflammatory problems. Also, hopefully it will help me lose weight. However, my basic eating guidelines came from Spark radio. There are two of them: Eat only when you are hungry, and eat till you are satisfied, not full. By using this credo, I have been able to gradually take off weight.

I too believe in exercise for health. That is why I started working out at the gym on 4/13/2014. There is nothing I know of that contributes to overall wellbeing than good fitness. Coming in a close second, is reducing ones stress level. Meditation can help considerably, but sometimes, it takes drastic changes in one's life circumstance to really get to reknow that relaxed self that we all have somewhere in us.

Though I'm not much of a laugher, I value a sense of humor. In the coming year, I hope to see more comedies, possibly read some witty things, lighten up and smile more. I have a new objective. For every five pounds I lose, I can buy a new comedy DVD. That will build up my collection of funny stuff for a while. Fitness can really help people feel better from the inside out.

Thank you for your very nice comments on my Spark page. Thanks for the encouragement. I have a great gift of encouragement for others, but fall short on it when it comes to myself. I appreciate what you stated and it is very true! emoticon emoticon

The "large glass" comment made me immediately think of the show "Cougar Town" and the glass Courtney Cox's character uses -- I think it is a flower vase!

Hi Glenn,

Alcohol is a tricky subject in general, and of course a real challenge when it comes to healthy living. Prior to my WLS, I was a regular beer drinker and it was amazing to look back and see all the food I would eat in addition to the beer (and I was not a light beer drinker -- I loved the heavier IPA's etc.). So a trip to a place like Buffalo Wild Wings could easily result in a 2000-3000 calorie event!

I've not had a beer since surgery, as carbonated beverages and my Lapband do not play nice with each other. My drink of choice is now wine, and usually no more than two glasses at dinner. Anything beyond that and it hits me like a brick! When DW and I head to our favorite Mexican restaurant, I splurge and get a margarita, but two of those bad boys can really do me in, so I usually try to nurse one, in spite of how smooth they taste!

Struggling with the "dependency" issue you brought up. I have to admit I do look forward to my 1-2 glasses of wine per night, so is that dependency? I have to think about that...

In any case, thanks again for bringing up an excellent and thought provoking subject in your blog!

Hi I like your program, to eat only when hungry and only til full. I have a similar program, Eat when hungry, Eat healthy food, Avoid unhealthy food, Eat small portions. Will work on that for a while as soon as I get stabilized. Am moving to a college town, my old college, and will get to school three times a week for a class. Get me out of the house and moving again. I just joined the writers group--very interested in talking shop and mutual support on writing. What are you working on now? I am just now printing an SP (self publishing) guide that I wrote for my self to use. Trying of hunting for my notes all the time! It was REALLY beneficial to put it together. Think it will make a difference and change things. Improve my work. Self editing is always a challenge, especially. Working on putting together a system for it, thru this book. sarah
