"You therefore must endure hardship." Like many others I like to excuse my weight gain as something out of my control. I don't have time to exercise. I don't always have control over what I eat and when I eat it. It's time to quit the excuses and make the hard choices. I must make time to exercise my body and exercise some self discipline over what I put into my body. These goals must become important to me.

"A man who wants something will find a way; a man who doesn't will find an excuse."
- Stephen Dolley Jr.

People almost always find a way to do what they really want to do.

"You must be careful how you walk and where you go, for there are those following you who will set their feet where yours are set."
- Robert E. Lee, Civil War General

UPDATE
7/3/10 I lost 50 lbs in the first year and gained 10 back pretty quickly. I'm sure it was muscle gain, but then I gained another 10 this Spring that I know is fat. I just simply eat too much. I've been doing well the last two weeks watching calorie intake. I've been exercising regularly the whole time. I can still run and lift the same or better than last year. I'm motivated once again - not sure when I lost it or how it came back. I'm going to update my goals right now.
8/15/09 I haven't lost anymore weight this summer, but I have maintained my goal weight. This summer included several weeks of unusual circumstances for weight maintenance so I'm actually very pleased to be right where I started this summer. I've kept my weight off for 9 months now. I'm encouraged that I can do it with an eating lifestyle that I really enjoy.

2/24/09 I lost a total of 51 lbs. and have been able to keep it off through the winter months (with some 5 lb. bounces here and there). I'm really looking forward to being able to run outside again with the better weather and longer days. I hope to lose another 10 lbs. this Spring/Summer.

11/11/08
I began losing weight in January of 2008 and have lost 48 lbs. so far (as of 11/11/08). I started with Spark People at the end of February and it has been a huge help! I've especially appreciated the informative articles, the nutrition tracker, and the fitness tracker. My wife has been my biggest helper. She has been able to encourage with a sweet and supportive spirit. In fact, my kids have even been very helpful in their own unique ways too! I'm looking forward to the challenge of keeping this weight off long term.

My Goals:
I want to remain healthy enough to play with my kids and eventually enjoy my grandchildren. I'm not trying to prolong life, just be able to enjoy it.

Reach 200 pounds by 10/31/08
(reached 10/8/08)

Reach 195 pounds by 12/31/08
(reached 12/10/08)

Maintain 195 for at least 6 months (so far, so good 2/24/09) Didn't accomplish this goal. I gained 10 soon after I started lifting weights (muscle) and then another 10 this Spring (fat).
