Hi there. My name is Rachel.

The basics:
I am in my early 20's and need to lose around 100lbs. My health is good, other than suffering from mild anxiety, but I have a strong family history of diabetes (and want to subvert it for myself!). I also have a Bachelor's in English (graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2012) with plans to return for a Masters in the fall, a passion for travel and the outdoors, and a love for life.

Why I am doing this:
I have been down this fitness road before, ever since childhood, and have always had initial success with radical diets only to fall off the wagon again with gusto. This is where I am drawing the line. I am the heaviest I have ever been at the same moment when I should be the freest I have ever been. I'm staring into a world of opportunity now that I am taking a short break from the academic grindstone, but my weight is holding me back. It inhibits my ability to comfortably do the things I love, and sometimes prevents me from doing them at all. It is time for a permanent change in my lifestyle. I don't care so much about being sexy or turning heads. I care about being free to live an adventurous lifestyle and free from health concerns looming over my head.

I am not just doing this for myself. I still live at home, and I want to help my parents live healthier lives as well. I have taken over the meal planning, grocery shopping, and cooking for the house in an effort to improve the health of all of our diets. It is sometimes hard attempting to be healthy in a house with other people -- especially when they bring home donuts -- and I know I can't make changes for others, but I am strengthening my willpower and fixing healthier meals in hopes that my journey to a healthy lifestyle will rub off on those I love.

I am also working closely with my best friend who is similarly on a road to change. The support from having a fitness partner is invaluable.

I have used SparkPeople before and neglected it, eventually giving up and abandoning my previous account, but I know that SparkPeople is a valuable tool and one I plan to utilize fully this time around.

Fitness Minutes: 101

My Goals:
Lose:
- 50lbs by July.
- 100lbs by January '14

Become:
- Healthier
- Fit
- A Mountain Biker
- A Backpacker

Do:
- Yoga 5x/week
- Cardio 3x/week

Gain the Ability to:
- Do yoga pose "Crow"
- Fit into skinny jeans
- Face the world unencumbered!


My Program:
My plan is Moderation and Movement. Specifically, I want to spend significantly more time off my tush.

My favorite exercise is Yoga; I love the slower pace and emphasis on strengthening the body through movements that utilize body weight. I can do yoga nearly anywhere and don't need special equipment. I also like that I can build up to poses that challenge me gradually, and the pace gives me time to adjust my body to the pose before adding movement.

For eating, I am focusing on less sweets and less carbs. I want to draw my carbs and sugars from vegetables and fruits. I am also avoiding highly processed foods. I eat strictly organic and grassfed meats and dairy and wild caught fish. I believe in humane practices and a lack of growth hormones and antibiotics. And, of course, with all things food...Moderation! Too much of a good thing is still too much.

I have failed in the past in part by trying to completely eliminate whole groups of foods from my diet; that



Personal Information:
I am from Tennessee, a practicing protestant Christian, and an avid reader and writer. I also love animals and practically live in a zoo. All of my cats, one of my dogs, and my rabbit are rescues. I also have laying hens and love our farm fresh, uncaged eggs for their bright colors, higher nutrition, and knowledge that they come from happy hens.
