Journey to save my life

Hi, I'm Leslie, I'm 48 married with two kids (high schooler and college). In December of 2012 I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure brought on by high blood pressure. They also diagnosed me with diabetes. The cardiologist stood in my hospital room on Christmas Day and told me that if I didn't make a change he didn't see me surviving for more than 10 more years. For me, this is not only about fitting into a smaller jeans size. I'm extending my life. Of course, the smaller clothes sizes ...
Of course, the smaller clothes sizes and enjoying shopping again are a great fun motivator along the way!
Update May 2014: I'm up to about 90 lbs lost. My heart function is at normal and so is my blood pressure and blood sugar. I have no need for diabetes medication at all, I control it with diet and exercise. My weight loss has slowed to barely a crawl even though I still eat within calorie range and exercise everyday. I'm so grateful I've spent the last year and a half adopting a whole new healthy lifestyle. I can honestly say I desire healthy food above empty calorie food. I don't feel right if I don't get my walking in each day. Most importantly I don't have to be motivated by what the scale is doing (or ot doing). I am motivated to preserve and continue to improve my health so I can fully enjoy this life!

In summary my goal is to have my health be the best it can be. That means achieving a healthy weight. Stabilizing my blood sugar and my blood pressure. Exercise every day. Eating foods that strengthen, feed and heal my body. Last but not least, taking care of my heart by doing all of the above.

My Program:
Lower sodium diet of no more than 2000mg per day preferably closer to 1500. 1200 - 1500 calories a day consisting of lean meat, lots of fruit and vegetables and healthy whole grains. I try to choose nutrient dense, rather than empty calorie foods and limit processed foods. I walk 30 minutes every day. I practice doing one thing at a time throughout my day to reduce stress. I focus on things that bring me pleasure and calm, like my family, music and my pets.

emoticon May you and your husband have an emoticon day of celebrating the love for each other that brought you together and that has grown and kept you together all these years!! Marriage is such a beautiful union but one that requires much effort so emoticon on putting in that effort to enrich and preserve your bond!! CELEBRATE today because this is a milestone to be celebrated. Also may you be blessed with many more years of wedded bliss should the Lord tarry. Again emoticon

Grand Canyon here we come! So great you made some healthy food choices. Salads can be so great when we add the little extras - like sunflower seeds, eggs and a little bit of meat. We have a place called Nothing but Turkey and they make the best salads and they are HUGE! I go there and get a salad and I can eat it for 2 meals and the Turkey is the real stuff not the processed junk. Keep making those healthy choices and the lbs will come off. emoticon Sous Chef EL Hector (Karin)
