Successful Action is Cumulative in Results
Max Steingart

Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.
Many people take the first step and stop.
Yet, with every additional step you take, you enhance immensely
the value of your first step.

All masters of success are chiefly distinguished by their power
of adding a second, a third and perhaps a forth step in a
continuous line.

There is no royal road to anything.
One thing at a time, all things in succession is the rule of life.
That which grows fast, withers as rapidly.
That which grows slowly, endures.
Do not despise the bottom rings in your ascent to greatness.

Thought you would appreciate this, m'luv:

It's appropriate that Garrison Keillor chose to share Billy's poem today on The Writer's Almanac, because today is Billy's birthday. And GREAT NEWS for fans of The Writer's Almanac: beginning in June, Billy will be filling in for Garrison for several months or maybe longer. It will be Billy's voice you hear each day on The Writer's Almanac on NPR, and the poems you read in the daily email version of the Almanac will be chosen by Billy. Great thanks to Garrison Keillor for his inspired idea to choose Billy.

The Country
by Billy Collins

I wondered about you
when you told me never to leave
a box of wooden, strike-anywhere matches
lying around the house because the mice

might get into them and start a fire.
But your face was absolutely straight
when you twisted the lid down on the round tin
where the matches, you said, are always stowed.

Who could sleep that night?
Who could whisk away the thought
of the one unlikely mouse
padding along a cold water pipe

behind the floral wallpaper
gripping a single wooden match
between the needles of his teeth?
Who could not see him rounding a corner,

the blue tip scratching against a rough-hewn beam,
the sudden flare, and the creature
for one bright, shining moment
suddenly thrust ahead of his time—

now a fire-starter, now a torchbearer
in a forgotten ritual, little brown druid
illuminating some ancient night.
Who could fail to notice,

lit up in the blazing insulation,
the tiny looks of wonderment on the faces
of his fellow mice, onetime inhabitants
of what once was your house in the country?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Billy Collins! Born in New York City (1941), he wrote his first poem at the age of seven when he was driving with his parents and looked out the river and saw a sailboat on the East River.

He continued to write poems even after he became an English professor. He wrote a couple of books before his breakthrough in 1988, when he published The Apple That Astonished Paris. He gained a following throughout the next decade, and by 1999, The New York Times called him "the most popular poet in America," pointing out that three of his four books were in the top 16 best-sellers on Amazon.com, competing with Walt Whitman, Robert Frost, and songwriters like Jewel and Jim Morrison.

His books include The Art of Drowning (1995), Sailing Alone Around the Room: New and Selected Poems (2001), and most recently, Horoscopes for the Dead (2011).

Billy Collins said: "I don't think people read poetry because they're interested in the poet. I think they're read poetry because they're interested in themselves."

I felt like a damned heifer in that kayak last week. The Biologist insisted that I wear a diving suit and I swear I felt like I was going to stroke out it was so tight.

The good news is....it's a 20 pound gain-back, not the entire 110...and I know what works and what doesn't...and I've started working on it instantly.
