Look Ahead!

It's now "Ahead"! Welcome, Val, to 2012, an amazing year-to-be, I'm sure. I want a lot this year, not limited to body stuff, but I definitely want to really hone this lifestyle change I started back in early 2010.

It's now "Ahead"! Welcome, Val, to 2012, an amazing year-to-be, I'm sure. I want a lot this year, not limited to body stuff, but I definitely want to really hone this lifestyle change I started back in early 2010.

I am my biggest motivation. The few months between January and April 2010, I managed to successfully lose weight that has plagued me since childhood. And not only that, I did it wisely, by using the tools and support in Sparkpeople and by educating myself about fitness and nutrition. I lost weight but rekindled my love of sports and physical activity and developed a love for food that fueled many an awesome potluck or cafe special. Right now I am sans-plan, that is, I am not following anything remotely rigid aside from the now-ingrained "do what your body feels is right" that, for the most part, has served me well the last couple years. Did you know I almost never want grains or breads for lunch or dinner? That I want eggs for lunch and a huge, heaping plate of greens for dinner? I just follow my urges. Who would have known....

So now that I am on farm sabbatical until March, I need to do some major controlling of said urges and I need to consciously make time for physical activity in my day. So... hello again and I can't wait to write you some silly blogs soon!

(the above added 2 January, 2012)

I gained a wee bit (or a 15 pound bit) and am a few days away from a season working long, hard days on an organic farm. I'm excited to see how my body will transform and will keep you guys posted when I can. My sister and I are going to try and lose 50 pounds between the two of us before our family reunion at the end of June. Oh it's on!

I steadily lost a pound and a half per week between January and April, but have been dealing with many roadblocks since Spring. I have a lot against me these next couple months: moving, dropping my gym membership to pay for my higher rent, stress-eating, losing one of my big supporters, and on and on. I want to at least maintain, but in reality I want a whole lot more. I need to ensure that my lifestyle change doesn't get tossed now that big life changes are being made!

Right now my program is a modified version of Janet Warner's 'This is Why You're Fat' program, or as I call it, 'J-Dub's mini-meals plus more protein plan.' I eat 5 meals a day, all clean, comprising of 4 proteins, 3 cups of veg, 2 fruits, 2 grains, and 1 big fat. Right now I am working on balancing my calorie intake with my exercise output, since I became a crazy calorie burner and didn't fuel myself properly, throwing off my metabolism and stretching my body pretty thin (and not the good kind of thin, knowhatimean?)
I'm running, swimming, walking and biking everywhere, and procrastinate on weights, but so it goes. I need to develop a fail-proof exercise plan that doesn't involve the gym-- not an easy task in Chicago's winter months!
(the above added 5 September)

"If you always do what you have done, you will always get what you have gotten."

Hey sparkfolks!
Today I have been at this for four and a half months. I woke up this morning (at 5am, thinking how perfect it would be to go for a run-- what's happened to me?!) and weighed in at 176.4 lbs. That is 30 pounds lost since starting Sparkpeople and one pound lower than I have ever weighed in memory. Seriously. I probably haven't weighed this little since fifth grade. This is my first big, big goal met! Now I'm venturing into uncharted territory and am thrilled to see what my body will look like a week, month, two months from now! My Spark-designated number goal is 164 pounds and I'm aiming to get there by June 30th. This may not happen, I suspect I'll be a few pounds shy, but the number is not a stopping point for me. I want to be fit, thin, and toned, so we are in this together until that thigh fat is gone!

I live in the Chicago area these days, though I am a Seattlite at heart. I am, however, so excited that this midwest summer is nigh upon us, since I have big dreams of laying around on the beaches near me as much as possible. I manage an amazing independent coffee shop that once served as a temporary distraction/ paycheck until I started graduate school, but now seems like the perfect place for me to be. Coupled with the slight obsession with food that Sparkpeople brings on and the appreciation for fresh and natural foods inherit in the Seattleite and honed while living in Germany, I am now a hopeless foodie. I love to cook and in the past year it really has become a supreme passion of mine. I eat better than I could in any restaurant, certainly better than in any I could afford, and am seriously considering doing this for a living. Right now I work for an organic farm on Saturdays, selling their produce at the local farmers market. It brings me so much joy to banter with people about vegetables-- who would have known!

emoticon Happy BELATED Birthday, DONE GIRL emoticon

The Aquarian child is some how an isolated only child when growing up and therefore gets lots of attention from adults. She becomes a "free thinker" and is very smart. She really isn't made to be a "stay-at-home-mom" as she has so much to give to the world. She makes a good teacher, scientist, or designer as she has new ideas. She loves people and can move from place to place with ease and make new "best friends forever." She gets along with Sagittarius, Libra, Aries, Leo and Gemini. She wouldn't do well with controlling Scorpio as she MUST have her freedom. Her weak areas are the ankles. She isn't cut out to be obese as she needs to move about freely. Denise Austin is a wonderful example of an Aquarian woman. She is turning 56 and still very "young". She's 5'4" and 112# but very strong.

In Aquarius the Sun is eccentric and original. You're apt to be a superb thinker, and your ideas are frequently advanced, no matter what field of profession you select. Often, your unique approaches to problem solving are viewed as too radical and unworkable, but you prefer to think of them as advanced and progressive instead. Unconventional and outspoken, you see your role as the rebel and the person who rejects worn out traditions and old ways of operating. You like to be with those ushering in the new order and fostering advanced thinking.
Paradoxically, you're a good team player, but one who must have personal freedom. You don't like to feel fenced in. While you're headstrong and inflexible in your ways, you can work very effectively within a large group. You have complete respect for the sound ideas put forward by others. You are aloof and detached, and your concerns are directed toward society rather than to the problems of any one person. You are somewhat impersonal most of the time. You're more emotionally involved with your work than you are with people. You can be highly critical and demanding in a position of authority. Nonetheless, you are a strong leader and organizer. You have a deep understanding of human nature, but often you lack sensitivity to the emotional content of many situations.
You thrive on change and managing the unexpected. Always ahead of your time, you are viewed by everyone as being different and unusual, labels you don't mind accepting. You pride yourself on your ability to find a better way of doing the job. Sometimes you lack follow through, and you always dislike routine. You like to take chances and keep everything stirred up. Occasionally, you enjoy antagonizing people in positions of authority, and stimulating a good argument now and then. You don't mind that you are seen as a bit unusual, in fact, you may encourage this image.
Equality, freedom and fairness are all important issues for you. You strongly subscribe to the doctrine that all people are created equal and should have the same rights and opportunities. In this regard, you are likely to be classified as a progressive and often associated with humanitarian issues and causes. Though you are very involved with such matters, your approach is always somewhat in the abstract, with ideological concepts, the sort that don't usually stem from true emotions. Your approach is often very impersonal and detached.
Friendly and sociable, you may have a wide circle of acquaintances. Friends are very important to you. Intellectually oriented, you are happiest with friends that share common ideas and interests. Strangely, you find it more difficult to cultivate a truly satisfying intimate relationship. This aloofness exists because feelings are rarely expressed outwardly, and you usually seem distant. You resist anything or anyone threatening your independence.
