My username, uncarchivist, reflects what I do in my current job. However, I am looking forward to retiring in a little over a year - will probably still be an archivist, at least part-time and not at UNC! The last 5 years have been challenging for me, healthwise, as I have dealt with the decline and deaths of both my parents, gained at least 20 pounds, and developed a thyroid condition (hypothyroidism). And now I have been diagnosed with degenerative disc disease and osteoarthritis in my lumbar spine (and just found a SparkGroup for support!). I have tried Weight Watchers, and had pretty good luck with controlling my weight until the thyroid started malfunctioning. The pain in my back makes some exercises impossible now, too. I find that I am struggling all the time with my weight. SparkPeople has been such a great resource, and I like all the motivational tools and team support.
My goal is a healthy lifestyle. I have recently stopped eating meat, and I am trying to limit my intake of dairy as well as increasing soy in my diet. After 55 years of eating foods grown with pesticides/herbicides and meat with antibiotics and growth hormones, no wonder my thyroid is whacky! My main goal is to eat healthier, more organic foods and get all the crap out of my body! With the back problems now, I need to lose weight as well.
In my younger years, I was never all that active, though I did play sports in my youth. I just never really had to worry that much about my weight. After the birth of my daughter and entering my 30s, I noticed that I could no longer eat what I wanted. That only gets worse as you get older! Now I'm trying to watch what I eat and become more active. I used to use the rowing machine for exercise, now my doctor says no repetitive motions - bad for the back! So walking seems to be the best bet, combined with some Yoga once I get the pain under control. I try to go for brisk walks almost every day. I'm also doing strength training through my SparkPeople program.
I am currently living in Durham, North Carolina and working in Chapel Hill. We have recently bought a house in Burnsville, though, and will be moving there when I retire next summer. I grew up in NC, went to UNCG, and currently work at UNC-Chapel Hill. I have worked in libraries all my adult life, I'm a huge reader, love to cook, esp. ethnic foods and spicy stuff. Married, with one grown daughter who is a lawyer in DC. Dog lover, outdoors lover, mountain lover, and woods lover. I'm getting back to nature when I retire! And I'm going to be a grandmother in March!
Current favorite book: Peace Like a River by Leif Enger
Love police procedurals, mysteries, detective fiction, fantasy, and in my younger days was a big Sci-Fi fan.
