My knees, hips, and spine are wearing out. Too much weight is part of the problem, according to the orthopedist. I have a terrible scoliosis problem. So I have begun the process of taking control.
UPDATE: 177lbs and back into size 16 jeans. That's down from size 20 relaxed fit, comfort waist jeans. I'm pretty happy about this!
UPDATE: 169.4lbs and size 16 jeans are quite baggy.
UPDATE: Hovering around 168lbs at the end of Apr 2013. I am aiming to lose 20 more and then re-evaluate the situation. I'd like to do this by the end of August, but I will be in the US for 3 weeks in July. In Maine. Eating lobster. I'm going to enjoy it and do my best to get a long walk or swim every day.
I need more time/miles on the treadmill each week. I need to try to stay closed to 1200 cals/day. I need to really devote time and energy to strength training, which I've been ignoring.
UPDATE June 2, 2013 - 160.6 lbs. this morning!
UPDATE July, 2013 - 156 lbs and I bought (and fit into) size 14 jeans! Beaming!
Update June 11, 2014 - After last summer's success, I got lazy. My good diet went by the wayside and the treadmill and kettlebells sat unused. I got back up to 176 and I feel it all in my gut. I've dropped 6 of those pounds and am currently at 170 lbs and working hard on the treadmill almost daily, trying to reach at least 10,000 steps a day.
Update: Sept 16, 2014 - I've been at 80 k/176 lb for quite a while now. I haven't quite gotten my drive back and I've been eating lots of bread. It's good homemade sourdough rye, but still carbs. My current goal is to reduce my carbs again and strive to increase my exercise. On a positive note, I've been jogging in place lately for extended periods. I haven't been able to do that for decades, it seems. I have size 14 pants waiting for me in the US to wear there and bring home forat Christmas vacation.
Update: Feb 2015. I got a Breville juicer for Christmas and have been trying to drink juice, herb tea, and water most of the day, and eating soup, salad, maybe some fish and a handful or two of nuts. I've been holding steady at 180-181 lb. I've started exercising again. Sore hips. Really sore! I need to get back into the treadmill habit. Only a couple more days to baseball season. My game plan is to be on the treadmill for a good hour of each game. I have a 5% weight loss plan for this month. Hoping the added exercise will make the difference.
Update: May 28, 2016. I have been juicing heavily for 1.5 years now, and have done several juice fasts of 2-4+ weeks. I have reached 150 lbs, but between fasts I tend to gain about 10 lbs. My goal is to keep my weight constant between fasts.
I am applying for teaching jobs in the US. Boarding schools are a very different lifestyle from my life in Mexico, working from home. I think I may get an Aria scale that 'talks' with my Fitbit to help me keep on track.
The most important thing is that I have learned that I can shed the weight. I can say 'no' to sugar. I love desserts. If I don't have them in the house, I don't eat them. It's that simple. A school dining hall is going to be a challenge.
I am going to the US in a few days for school visits, which will, hopefully, result in an offer to teach either Spanish or ESL at a New England boarding school. Fingers crossed. It's a huge step. My husband won't join me for the first year or so, but I need to start injecting money into Social Security and my retirement fund. I'll be 55 this summer, so retirement is suddenly becoming ominous.
My big, long term goal is to get back down to at least 150 and to be healthier.
Weigh-ins every two weeks.
Try to track foods.
Cut way back on refined carbs.
Get my butt moving - the hardest thing for me to do consistently.
200lb - Dead videos All the Years Combine - DONE!
190lb - get an 18lb kettlebell and a second 10lb kettlebell. I ended up getting 2 15 pounders. DONE!
180lb - order a new Cuisinart work bowl to replace the broken one - I got a whole new Cuisinart for Christmas! Thanks, Mom!
170lb - get one half gallon of Haagen-Dazs every two months. Put it on the calendar. (I have not done this, as I feel it would be sabotaging myself...)
160lb - get the old size 14 pants out of storage
150lb - alter favorite clothes
140lb - If I can get back down to 140, I'll be thrilled to have recovered my health and well being. This will be the ultimate reward.
I have started keeping closer tabs on what I eat - choices and quantities.
For exercise I used Leslie Sansone's 5-mile walk videos, which I found on YouTube.
I've added kettlebells (doing the LiveFit Revolution program - www.livefitrevolution.org ) and a resistance band, as well as a Gaiam balance ball chair to sit in while I work (from home - on the computer all day) for core strength.

I started gaining weight in my mid-20s when I was diagnosed with endometriosis and began hormone therapy. I went from 125 to 185 in the course of about 2 years. I did a great deal of physical activity in the following years - cycling, skiing, hiking, but the weight didn't come off. I began taking a weight loss product I had seen on an infomercial, and, over a year and a half, went from 187 down to 134. The product increased my metabolism and was wonderful for me. Then I moved to Mexico and was no longer cooking just for myself. My husband is a bean pole, and I have ballooned to over 215. Unfortunately, the weight loss capsules I used to take have been taken off the market, so now it's up to me to get in control - difficult, as I love sweets, especially chocolate. And red wine...
