I'm Turning a New Leaf!

I've struggled with my weight for several years, lost a few pounds here, gained them back, lost more, and gained even more again. I'm ready to lose for good! I've done weight watchers, but feel like I need something new, so I'm here! Since January '09 I've actually lost about 22 pounds, so I just wanna pick up the pace and try a little harder!

UPDATE 4/7/10:
Just wanted to add a little more about how I got to where I'm at now! In January '09 I was probably at my highest weight, somewhere between 190-195. I saw the scale and it freaked me out that I was nearing 200 pounds, but I was sick of dieting and I was about to embark on a 6 month adventure in South America, so I didn't feel like dealing it. So I went to study abroad in Chile and traveled to Argentina as well. It was amazing! For that whole 6 months, I never weighed myself once because I didn't have a scale, and I really could care less about my weight. I walked A LOT everyday, but didn't exercise besides that. My eating changed a lot. I ate less because of the way my host family prepared meals. My host mom made relatively healthy lunches, and didn't cook dinner so I usually just ate a cheese or avocado sandwich or leftovers. And I usually just had toast for breakfast. My downfall was candy and chocolate though. This was my worst point, when I bought chocolate or cookies all the time and probably ate 5/6 candy bars a week...eek! Amazingly enough, when I got back home, I had lost a little over 10 pounds! It was all that walking and the small meals, I swear.

Then in August '09 I went for a checkup to the doctor, and she wanted to take some blood tests because of my weight. That's when I found out I have metabolic syndrome/syndrome x. This is a health condition that is basically a cluster of risk factors, and requires that you have at least 3 of a list of several factors. I was overweight (by a lot), had really low HDL cholesterol (the good kind), and very high blood triglyceride levels (fat). I found out this meant I was at risk for developing Diabetes and Heart Disease. This was a total wake-up call for me. It really freaked me out! I knew I was overweight, but I didn't realize it was impacting my health so much! And Diabetes? Heart Disease? I was only 20 years old! So, I decided to take action and I joined weight watchers (for the 3rd time). I joined online so I could fit it in with my busy college life. From September '09 to December '09 I lost 10 pounds. I hadn't worked as hard as I could have, but I exercised occasionally and tried to eat healthy as much as possible. I wasn't 100% committed though.

In January '10 my commitment to healthy living was renewed, and I decided to start the Couch to 5k program to start running. I also discovered and joined SparkPeople! However, it wasn't until February '10 that I actually started using the site and becoming active on it. And I LOVE SPARKPEOPLE! It has totally changed my life, the way I think about eating and exercise. It took SparkPeople to make me realize that there is no "just for now," that this really is for life. And for the first time in my life I've been dedicated to exercise regularly for weight loss, and not just focus on food intake!

Since mid- Jan '09 I've lost 12 pounds! That's 4 pounds a month :)

I have my good moments, and I have my weak moments, but there's no going back!

BMI currently: 25.4 (almost in the healthy range!)
Goal BMI: 22

Body Fat Percentage September '09 (at 178.8 pounds): 33.8%
Body Fat Percentage currently: 27.7% (-6.1% body fat! In the average range!)
BFP Goal: 24% (in the fitness range)

Dress Size 12! Down from a 16 (at one point, nearly 18)! Never going back, and can't wait to get into the single digits)!
Dress Size Goal: size 8.

My Program:
I'm eating within my calorie/fat ranges and trying to stick with more low glycemic index (GI) foods, and less High GI foods. So lots of veggies, protein, and whole grains. I'm also vegetarian. Doing my best to limit sugary and processed foods, it's a challenge but I'm working on it!

I'm trying to work out 4-5 times a week.
FINISHED Couch to 5k program 3/27/10!
Trying to get back intro running. Goal is to run two days a week, strength train at least 1 day a week, and do other fun classes at least once a week (Zumba, Yoga...try spin class)

Personal Information:
I'm 22, from New Jersey, but recently relocated to San Francisco. I work at a Community School with the families of students.

I love to travel, especially internationally. I've been a vegetarian for 8 years. I love animals. Sometimes I like to read, and I enjoy listening to music (lots of types!).

Let me know if you want a sparkbuddy, I love getting to know other Sparkers! I could definitely use some support and motivation to get back into the swing of things!

Hey, I was thinking about the Rock n Roll half, so I was wondering if you'd started your training and how is it going?

Haven't officially started training for it yet, but next Saturday I'll do my first long run for the race prep!

Hey, I'm also in the 20-somethings group and saw you're looking for friends. I saw that one of your goals is to run a 5k - how far are you? It's also one of my goals, and I can jog about 2 miles right now; I still have a lot of room to grow. Do you have any favorite ST exercises?
