Thanks for the encouragement. I have some great news. I put on my 20 pants today and they are comfy!! I am getting really excited. I also started my cardio last night!! Things are looking brighter today!!
thanks for the tips about strength training, sandra! i've been doing strength exercises for about thirty minutes three times a week. I've been wondering when to up the resistance, and recently i did just because i was feeling stronger, and the weight i was lifting was too easy. but your reference to upping the weight every 2-3 weeks was right on! it's been about 2.5 weeks since i started. It sure does feel good when the exercises you used to struggle with become easy!

I had knee surgery recently, and had to be sedentary for more than two months. believe me, it's not fun, but if you have to do it, you get through it. but sounds to me like you're lucky enough to have the chance to avoid it!
