Oh, I'm pretty sure I gained way more than 4 pounds some years, too, but I was averaging out the gain - some years I just maintained, some I gained, some I may have lost a little. After all, I didn't really do the weight-watching thing most of my life. I'd weigh, but only just to know where I was - I still liked what I saw in the mirror, I guess - fooling oneself is really easy! :)
But on average, I only gained 4 a year from my young=adult days and weight - that's the "goal weight" on my ticker right now, so I averaged the weight from those days up to beginning SP last year - that's how I arrived at the 4-gained-per-year number.
And for losing - well, even if we only lose ONE pound a month, that's still 12 in a year. And a slow loss means that we won't have the loose surplus skin issue ... I like the idea of letting my body adjust to the new weights a little at a time. I also don't like pressure, so a slow loss works well for me - I eat a little healthier, work out a little more, no stress ... the weight continues to come off a little at a time, maybe just half a pound a week, and that's actually fine by me! :)
