I started at 289 (may actually have been more -- that's just the highest the doctor's scale ever said) and had already lost 20 lbs. before finding this site. I'd stabilized at the new weight, but felt stuck. This site and its community have been a great help! I've already reached my first major goal and am working on my second.

My original goal was to lose 10% of my body weight (27 pounds) by my next birthday, which was a year away. If I tried to think any farther than that, I felt defeated before I even started, but I KNEW I could lose 27 pounds in a year!

However, when I suddenly found out that I was going to Europe that spring, I worked hard and reached my first major goal before then. I wanted to be ready for lots of walking on the trip, so I worked to get in better shape, especially with my cardio. After three weeks in Europe, eating like it was going out of style but walking all day most days, I only gained one pound! That's the power of exercise!

I hit a big bump in the road when my mother fell and suddenly was unable to live independently. At first I plateaued, but finally under the stress I crumpled and put on ten pounds. I lost and regained that weight twice in the next six months! At that point, I felt my eating was getting increasingly out of control, including bingeing like I hadn't in two years. This convinced me to get some help for my eating disorder, and so I joined a group through my HMO.

Then my husband was furloughed and eventually his whole department was laid off. Our school was almost closed down and my job was in danger, too. I was one of the 30% of teachers remaining after the cutbacks, but am now teaching different classes. Today I'm actually happy about the change, liking my new classes better, but at the time it was very stressful and scary. Not only did I have a new boss, new coworkers, and an incredible learning curve, but I had to do tons of preparation for each class.

I continued to do a lot of dysfunctional eating until I was up 22 pounds from my low weight! That scared me back into SparkPeople.

Now I'm trying to apply what I've learned both through my eating disorder group and SparkPeople, and I'm on the way down again. I don't expect it to be easy, but I'm feeling confident I'll get to my goal eventually.

Hmm... Maybe an out of town trip? Or... ???


My Program:
I have so much weight to lose that it's all too easy to feel overwhelmed. So I've divided the work into tiny, manageable goals, and I try to celebrate every time I reach one of them.
