I've never seriously dieted but always thought calorie restriction was the only way to do it.
I know it's not popular in this day of "more is better" when it comes to consuming grains, but I am now a firm believer in carbohydrate restriction as the main tool for weight control and health. Not just as a diet but as a way of life. Not extreme restriction, I keep my carbs at 25-30% of my diet instead of the USDA recommended 50-55%. This is a natural way to reduce calories painlessly because it's really hard to eat too many calories when you're not eating tons of grain products (You can't have southern fried chicken without the flour coating, or biscuits and gravy without...the biscuits and gravy!)
I get 90% of my carb calories from vegetables and a few fruits so I'm getting lots of nutritionally dense food.
I feel great, I'm never hungry, my blood sugar is constant all day, and the weight is dropping off.
The tools on Spark People make it so easy to keep track of what you eat. And it's fun! It's like playing an interactive video game in which YOU are the main character.

My Goals:
I'm tired of feeling like I have to use clothes to hide the fat. I want to get back into the clothes I love to wear and enjoy shopping again.

My Program:
Resistance exercises and dancing, along with a low carb diet. Low carb is a necessity to combat my hypoglycemia. Since I eat gluten free it's not a major hardship. I enjoy finding ways to make food taste great without carbs.

Personal Information:
After getting married, the pounds crept on almost without me noticing. My husband is a sweets freak and carboholic and wanted meals to revolve around pasta, rice, potatoes and beans (and desserts). I've changed our diet and we're much healthier now. He's at his ideal weight and I'm going to get there.

Other Information:
Since my daughter was diagnosed with celiac disease over 3 years ago, I have done a lot of research on the subject and keep a gluten free kitchen. I have also written a gluten free cookbook and blog about the gluten free lifestyle at
