On August 20, 2008 my life changed. My husband, my self and our 3 beautiful children were on vacation. We had just left my Grandma's house and were on our way home. We knew we had a long drive ahead of us, as we had to drive across the country to get home. We had been on the road for only a few short hours, and had just crossed into the USA, when we lost control of our van. We skidded across the road and when the tires hit the gravel our van flew 15 feet into the air, rolling and landed on the drivers side. It then rolled another 4 or 5 times down a hill, hitting trees on the way. It finally came to a stop on it's roof. I was yelling because I couldn't get my seat belt off and my husband was unconscious. All of a sudden my 12 year old son managed to unbuckle himself and then both of us at the same time. He yelled for me to call 911, so I climbed out of the van to retrieve my phone. That's when I saw my 8 year old daughter run past me and I saw my 2 year old daughter trying to climb out the window. I grabbed her and headed to where my older daughter went. Someone come to help us up the hill, and told us 911 had already been called. My son then pulled my unconscious husband out of the van single handed. He had managed to do all this before anyone could get down to help him. Thank god we were all ok, aside from myself having severe seat belt bruising, a bruised arm and a mild concussion, and my husband having his ear almost completely ripped off and some cuts on his arm, a fractured orbital bone, and a severe concussion. My greatest joy of that day was that my kids were UNHURT. Everyone who saw the van said we should have died, not all walked away. Thank God for seat belts, boosters and car seats.
Like I said, that day changed everything. I now know how important life is. I now know that I NEED to change my habits, so I can be around for my kids. Life is precious, and we can't eat it away. My husband and my kids are my reasons for wanting to change.
To no longer be obese.
To no longer be overweight.
Eating sensibly, watching my calorie intake, and exercising LOTS.
My name is Joy, I live in Northern Alberta with my husband and our 3 kids.
