Still here. Maintaining, running, living

11-21-2011 wow, its been a long time since I have been on here. I have turned 40 and survived. There was never a doubt I wouldn't. In fact, I am now on 42 and life is pretty good. If anything I am still a bit startled to be "in" my 40's, but the numbers do not lie. In age or on the scale. I looked back over the posts below which tracks since I have started. It was nice to see the changes and growth. I suppose with 2011 almost gone its time to look toward 2012. And it doesn't scare me. ...
Since turning 40 I now have 12 marathons and 2 ultras under my belt. I am back to my race speeds pre-injury in 07 having pushed outside my comfort zone to get new PR's in the 5k and our big race of the season here, the Crim 10 miler. I also tackled the Ultra marathon, which is any distance longer than 26.2, doing a 55 (34 miles) and 50k (31 miles) and placing in my age group in both. I am also still maintaining 4 years later and am continuing to conquer the demons of body image and "bad" food. This has, and will be, a constant exercise. And far harder than any physical exercise you could throw at me. I feel like I am pretty much there. Where ever "there" is for each and every one of us. Sure, I had to give up a rock hard, no fat body, but I was the only one who liked it and knew what it took to get there. Now I am in a happier body. I am a bit softer, don't work out as long or hard, am able to enjoy food more instead of seeing it as an enemy to be contained and not having the treats that make life fun. And its not so bad. As many have said before me, all in moderation. And its true. And I am still alive. I haven't died over it. Although my scale is angering me as we speak. But, its something I am equipped to deal with now. I guess all of this rambling is to tell people, maybe myself, that it gets easier. So with 2012 coming I will continue the good fight of remembering all I have done, how far I have come physically and mentally and of finding the balance. The one where I can say my thighs are ok and my butt looks fine. The goal for 2012? LIVE! Like I have a choice, lol. I guess I sort of do. So I will choose to live it with with gusto. With grace, will, posperity, heart, soul, laughter, hard work, fun, friends, and all of it one day at a time with time to savor and enjoy it all. Good or bad.

1-16-09 All right, so its another year. 2009 and the year I turn the big 4-0. And I am not scared one bit! Bring it Mother Nature, you don't scare me. I am a streamlined, healthy woman who has been through worse than turning 40. I look forward to it. I have embraced it and am even excited to be part of this age group. I have so many inspring and awesome examples in my life of what "life is after 40" that it sounds kind of fun. My running group is an amazing assortment of "after 40's", my own mother, my cousin Michele who is my hero, my friends here who have hit that number before me all make it seem like a little bit of nothing. I am honored to walk to line before a lot of my other friends and even my husband. I want to be one of the people on their list who can say made 40 seem so normal.

I am not sure what to expect of 2009, other than my looming lurch into another decade which I will celebrate by doing my first trail marathon with the running group. 2008 will be hard to top. I graduated from college 18 years after I quit. I ran 3 1/2 marathons. One with the Martians-yep green ones, once with Hungry Ducks-mmmHmm and the 3rd to honor a life taken too soon. I ran (yes, ran baby) my first FULL 26.2 in Detroit and exceeded my time goals. I ran a few local races placing in most. I ran the Mackinaw bridge-twice. Once with my Dh in his first and only race and the second time as a lottery draw to run with our Governor. During that one I also got to run with Bobby Crim who is an idol and the creator of the run in our town that made me start running in the first place--how cool is that! (I have a blog on it with a pic too) For someone who does not like bridges it was the year for them as the Detroit Marathon has the Ambassador bridge into Canada that we ran with Elvis (not kidding since I have the image burned into my brain) so there is 3 crossings. I also ran the worlds only International under water mile in a marathon by coming back into the USA through the tunnel in Detroit during my marathon. How Cool! While running I saw a lot of beautiful sunrises, a skunk stuck in a jar, herded sheep back to a pasture, saw migrating Sand Hill Cranes, ran on ice during a thunderstorm, saw lots of deer and met a lot of great people. And I ran healthy. I have 2 marathons on the board already with more coming I am sure. 2 1/2's are planned as well as trying to get back to my pre-injury pace of 7:03 in a 5k.

I also got the unique opportunity with my job to learn to see life in a different way and with much appreciation for what I have. And what I have is a very blessed life. I have learned to be happy that the laundry is piled up because it means I have enough clothes to wash and the means to do it. Same with dishes. It means I have food to eat. I have family and friends that I care about and they care about me. I have a very good man in my husband. You see I work for a Domestic Violence program that also runs a shelter. Unfortunately I will be leaving it soon, but will take the life lessons with me forever. I will think twice before I complain about life or luck. The women I have met in the past 18 months have left a mark on me and I only hope that I could have their courage.

On a lighter note I would like to maintain my weight for another year, work on continuing healthy habits and improve a couple. Why is beer so good? lol.

So, hello 2009. Here I am. What do you have planned for me?

10-10-08- over 2 years on SP now and almost 2 years into maintenance. I am still at goal and in my 5lb range. I am a healthier and smarter runner and getting ready to tackle my biggest fitness challenge to date. The full marathon. yep, in 9 days. I am totally freaking out, scare and so excited! This from the angry oreo eating couch potato of 2 years ago. So, steady as she goes for another year. Not too shabby I suppose. More marathons are in my future as well as encouraging my DH on his recently started lifestyle over haul. I am not sure which will be harder? lol.

12-10-07- I am 1 year into maintenance now. I feel great and have seen so many changes in myself. I am very proud of my accomplishment, but more proud that I am inspiring others to try a healthier lifestyle. I am making a difference in my own house as well as with people I work with and even strangers. It is amazing that a healthy and positve attitude can be so contagious. In the next year I will continue to carry on as I am now. I am eating great new things and balancing the good with the bad. I have cheat days and no longer fear them. I am strong now in body and mind and I will carry on with my strength training for my body and soul. With 2008 around the corner I will start the new year healthy and ready to tackle what it holds. I plan on another 1/2 marathon, or 3, and would like to do my first full. Since I do not do resolutions any more I will follow my usual tradition to simply find humor in every day.

1-16-07 I am close to 6 months now. I have met my goal and have decided now to try a 1/2 marathon earlier than I hoped for. This is worth it everyone! Don't wait. Just do. Do whatever as long as it gets you to your goal

I started this in August 2006 as a challenge with myself to change my inside more than my outside. Although most of my friends and family called me thin I just didn't feel good about myself. I knew I could feel better and look better as a result. People say you have to walk before you run and that is my story. 3 months into this I have found out that I like to run and have now completed 5 5k's. I am just an average person who wants to lose some vanity pounds and find a new outlet. I just need some motivation like everyone else. This site helps me be true to myself by tracking my life.

My Goals:
My goals are much the same as any other year. -To push when I think I can not get any farther
-To try the impossible.
-Maintain, maintain, maintain!
-Accept my body and learn to love it. Which is also my 2010 resolution and gift to myself.
-To go for some new PR's. Its time to get back to where I left off in 07 before the injury. I would like to get back to speed and break my elusive 7 min mile. I got to 7:01.
-I will also continue to place value on a rest day when it is needed and train smarter. No more pelvic stress fractures!

Running wise in 2010-
-I want to break 4 hours for a marathon
-Become a Bronze Level Marathon Maniac!
-I would like to add Ultra-marathoner to my resume.
-I also plan to add a couple of more states to my 50 state quest. It will be slow, but I am patient.

I will feed my inner warrior by eating well and training hard!

My Program:
My program is to stay inside of my alotted calories, run 3-4 times per week and do strength training at least 2 times per week. I find that I need days off to let my body rest. I also let myself indulge when I need to and regroup the next day. Life is too short to ignore cheesecake.

Personal Information:
I am also a garden junkie. I love to garden and I am always on the lookout for new plants or ideas. I like photography as well and can be found in my garden with my camera quite a bit.

Oh my gosh girl the 10 mile and the 5k all in one day plus the 1 mile with your mom!! do you ever slow down and just do one race??? LOL I'll let Rich know to keep an eye out for you. He hasn't been running the intervals, he's basically at 2 miles now before he stops and takes a walking break and then its only 15-20 steps and he's off again, his goal is also 30, he did come in under 30 the other night when him and I ran in the subdivision.

Thank you so much for the tips. Driving down Miller Rd the other night, I realized just how hilly it is, never before, but now I see it LOL amazing what looks different from a runner's perspective. I do plan on taking my walking breaks..hopefully no longer than a minute but shooting for 30 seconds or less during those breaks. My longest run was 9.5 miles and did so in 1hr 36 minutes, BUT that was here in my own sub. which lacks HILLS!! The butterflys have started. I will finish, I know that. I'm not going to come in first in any age group, but I will finish!! My main goal is to be done within the 2 hours I have to see Rich start his first 5k...truly I wanna be done way before that, but I have to stop putting so much pressure on myself. I'll be fine---i think LOL
I'll look for ya in the beer tent! I think we are meeting a few friends in there that are also running the full race. Just so you know I 100% blame YOU for me going through all of this!! LOL
