Teresa's Journey: Life is an Adventure!

I'm Teresa and I turned 49 this year. I've been married to Brad, my high school sweetheart, for almost 19 years, though we actually started dating back in 1982. We have 4 children: Zach, 23yo; Jake, 18 yo; Katie, 15 yo; and Lily, 11 yo.

In 2001, things were great. I had just quit smoking. I'd rediscovered a love of running and was training to run a 5K race with my son. On Thanksgiving Day we found out we were pregnant. I was a size 4. ;-) All was right with the world. In ...

In 2001, things were great. I had just quit smoking. I'd rediscovered a love of running and was training to run a 5K race with my son. On Thanksgiving Day we found out we were pregnant. I was a size 4. ;-) All was right with the world. In December, Brad was diagnosed with Acute Mylogenous Leukemia and started a brutal round of chemotherapy and hospital stays to try beat the cancer. In July, Lily was born. Shortly after her birth, I went into congestive heart failure and was diagnosed with Peripartum Cardiomyopathy. My heart had enlarged and it wasn't able to pump blood properly.

Both conditions are often fatal, but Brad and I beat the odds. He's been in remission for more than nine years and after four years of impaired heart function, my heart is healing and slowly returning to normal.

To celebrate, Brad and I trained to run a mini-marathon in May 2006 on our 11th anniversary. (We did it!) Unfortunately due to injury and real-world stuff getting in the way, we've let our running program slide. We didn't run the Mini the last couple of years and neither of us has been running or working out consistently at all for the past two and a half years.

We are trying to make changes that will lead to a healthier lifestyle for our family. Nutrition and exercise that can become a part of our lives and not something that seems like "work."

My Goals:
My goal is to create a more healthy lifestyle for myself and for my family.

My Program:
I've started The Fast Metabolism Diet and so far am a huge fan. Planning to run another half marathon this fall after a couple of years with no steady running. Hoping to broaden my exercise routine by taking a few classes and meeting new people who share my healthy lifestyle. We are trying to eat clean and have cut out most processed foods and increased our intake of veggies and fruit. Very happy to report that I've also cut out all caffeine.

Personal Information:
My name is Teresa. I am a stay-at-home mom who has four children, ages 11 yo to 23 yo.) I'm married to my high school sweetheart and senior prom date. :-)

Other Information:
"Now if you are going to win any battle you have to do one thing. You have to make the mind run the body. Never let the body tell the mind what to do. The body will always give up. It is always tired morning, noon, and night. But the body is never tired if the mind is not tired. When you were younger the mind could make you dance all night, and the body was never tired...You''ve always got to make the mind take over and keep going."

Hi Teresa! Welcome back (with open arms). So glad you have decided to make your health a priority again. The rookie runners are going strong still, and there are a great bunch of regular posters in there. Jump right in, I know they'll make you feel at home, even if most of the faces are new.

I have been dealing with Plantar Fasciitis all of 2010, and am so ready to get over it. It seems to really have a good hold on me, even with my enforced rest months to try and combat it. 2011 is going to be my year!

So good to have you back!

Hi Theresa,
Looks like you and I have a little bit in common in the area of weight loss.

I have 5 kids, all mostly grown, Christopher the youngest is 18. My oldest Daughter is 32 and has 4 kids The 3 youngest are still at home. My mother lives with us. She is 85 and has multiple health issues. I am diabetic and it runs in the family. So, losing weight and my struggle to make myself exercise, are not just for looks!!

Thanks for commenting on my site. Sometimes I feel like a lone internet surfer. All the years I have been on the internet I have done very little interacting online and have acquired no online friends. So, it was a surprise and nice to be noticed!!

I wish my husband would try to do healthy things with me. He says he is too tired after he gets done working. I do understand, but I don't like it, LOL!!
You and your husband hang in there with your goals, looks like you have accomplished a lot already.

I didn't end up running at Cory. My fathers b-day party was on Sunday, so I was helping get ready for that. I have been running about twice a week though. Usually about 2 - 2.5 miles. Depending on how much time I have. So how have you been?
