I was a cute little girl who grew up to be a big and beautiful woman. Now in my 40s, with a family history of diabetes (all three kinds) and heart disease (heart attacks, a heart transplant, valve replacements), it's time to stop this trend......
My journey to understanding:
- Health history: I had a stroke at 21 from Chiropractic manipulation (tore the endothelial lining of the carotid artery) and got to learn to walk, talk, and use my right arm again. Please note, I've been overweight since I was 8, and I have no issues with idea of chiropractic medicine, but now know about 10% of the population should not have neck adjustments - the practitioner I went to just never bothered to do the simple test to see if I was one of them. I not only learned how strong I personally was, but the "excuse" of not being able to do anything high impact became my excuse to allow me to continue gaining weight.
At some point in my late 20s I'd moved to the lower Hudson valley of NY and lost over 100 lbs. that got me down to size 10 (barely!) and about 164. The next promotion led me to Charlotte NC - there I had an accident(?) at the gym - worked out after a particularly stressful day at work to the point of exhaustion, didn't cool down, and passed out in the shower... 21 staples and a stitch later (scalp), I was done with my gym experience! Having gone from entire restaurants focused on healthy food in NY to NC where even a grilled chicken sandwich came with mayo unless you knew to order it without, it didn't take long to gain most of the weight back.
I'd hung out in the mid-200s for most of my 30s (thanks to being a professional dieter), but the last two years at work have been particularly stressful again, emotional eating, combined with having a man in my life who used time with me as his excuse for poor eating habits - I wasn't surprised when after we departed ways this fall I stepped on the scale to my highest number yet - 289. That was my wake-up call...
I'd found Spark back in July 2011. However, I travel away from home M-F, and spent weekends with the beau. He wasn't ready to change his lifestyle then, and I wasn't ready to do it without his support. After the break-up (and scale feedback), I hyper-focused to find the weight loss plan I was going to follow. As a professional dieter, I've tried most and can tell you specifically why various ones didn't work for me! I found one, kinda started it, made a few adjustments on my own for what I knew had worked for me in the past, made a few more adjustments, and found a name already existed for the plan I had kinda created for myself! So I immediately shifted my research to the new diet, landed on this plan with very few modifications, and started the hard work. After taking off the first 10-15 lbs, I re-engaged with Spark and now you're stuck with me!
As of mid-January, I'm was down 50 lbs. Mid-April, I'm down 80. My first major goal for 2012 is to get out of the obese category(ies) - that will be below 190 for me (quite a wake-up call - I have to loose 100 pounds to no longer be classified as obese... For those of you trying to get your weight in check before it get "out of hand" - DO IT!). Then the next phase will be leaving the overweight category to be in the "normal range" if not by 2013 then certainly within 2013!
What I Know:
I'm responsible for my own choices and decisions in life.
If I maintain a healthier lifestyle, the weight comes off.
We are social creatures; therefore, it's "easier" to maintain a healthier lifestyle with "support".
With that in mind, I'm grateful to all you Sparklers who are keeping me on track and focused on my personal goals - the support I find here on a daily basis is incredible and invaluable. Sharing our journeys and experiences provides the support, inspiration, and additional knowledge I need - lacking all judgement - to reach my goals.
This isn't the next diet to make me "skinny for a minute!" - but a lifestyle change to make me "healthy for the rest of my life".
I will be a CLEAN EATING, DIRTY GIRL - please read on...
* Enact a series of lifestyle changes to support enough weight loss to no longer be in the obese category - July 2012 - Independence from Obesity!
* Once "just" overweight, enact another series of lifestyle changes to support further weight loss and increase physical strength and endurance to prepare for a 5k obstacle course (Mud Run)...
- Once in "healthy" long term weight range, transition to sustainable, maintainable eating plan.
- Participate in a Mud Run!
Currently eating Paleo/Primal. I love that cravings are under control and weight loss is continuing. My plan when closer to final goal is to remain GF and introduce enough higher starch, whole foods to Retain this awesome achievement!

12/02/11 -10% starting wght
01/17/12 -50 lbs (1/3 goal)
01/30/12 -10% (from 12/02)
04/02/12 -75 lbs *halfway"
04/02/12 -10% (from 1/30)
I need to celebrate as much as possible - so I plan to post dates when the following are achieved as
- Each time I loose 10%
- When I loose 75, 100, and 150lbs. 75 because it will be my halfway point!
- When I enter One-derland (199)
- Once Over Weight vs Obese
- When I cross over into new territory... Lowest weight ever in my adult life.
- Will not consider surgical options for excess skin unless/until 15-17% body fat.

Thanks for the great workout idea. I had a hard time getting there today but thought about doing just half the workout but I did the whole thing :)
