A Woman On A Mission

Hi, I'm Linda. I've been overweight all my life, but never had any health problems until 2005. In December 2006 I was diagnosed as a Type II diabetic, had high cholesterol, had high blood pressure, needed both knees totally replaced, have 2 herniated discs in my neck, have 2 slipped discs in my lower back, and degenerative arthritis in my lower spine and would've ended up in a wheelchair full time if I did't get the excess weight off. NOW!!! I also have severe acid reflux and acute sleep ...
NOW!!! I also have severe acid reflux and acute sleep apnea.

In Sept. 2006 I started looking into WLS. For the previous 10 years I vowed that my life would never hinge on that decision, but in the end, it did. After being diagnosed with Type II diabetes I knew I had to do something. I am deathly afraid of needles and I have seen how this horrible disease has ravaged my ex-husband's body. I asked for, and received a gym membership for Christmas 2006 and on 1/3/07 I started using it and went on a modified low carb diet. There was a prerequisite of 8 sessions with a clinical psychologist for my WLS that I began in Jan. 2007 and I continue to see her once a month even though I met my requirement by April 2007.

The #1 reason I succeeded is because my head is on straight now. I no longer sabotage myself with: "Boohoo, it's not my fault I'm fat; I'm not worth it; I'm not going to deprive myself of the things I love; 1 more won't hurt"; and on, and on. I also QUIT LYING to myself like: "I CAN keep unhealthy things in my house and not eat them; I CAN quit eating unhealthy anytime I want; I CAN eat just one; I don't have any health problems, so I'm fine; I am not addicted to food"; etc., etc.

#2 is I'm committed. I could have lost 60-70 lbs. prior to surgery on the diet I was on, but I only lost 51 because I kept cheating. I have not cheated once since 8/31/07, the day of my WLS. I have not had one complication or side effect from my surgery. That's a blessing and a curse. Many people who attempt to cheat after surgery get deathly ill from cheating. I'm nearly 3 years out now and can eat, at least a little bit, of most anything I want and not get sick. My doctor even told me I could have a small piece of wedding cake and some sips of champagne at my daughter's wedding, but that was a huge decision for me. If I could get away with it once, what would keep me from doing it again? I had a small piece of cake and one sip of champagne and that's all.

#3 is I know my weaknesses and I can't allow myself to go there anymore. I have chosen this course and I cannot stray from it.

I have written blogs if you want to go read them. I also have a progression of pictures through my weight loss journey in my photo gallery.

I now weigh 81 lbs. less than my DD. If only I could get this message across to her. All I know to do is to set the example and hopefully she will follow before it is too late. Hopefully, she won't wait until she's 57 yrs. old to make this decision. I don't recommend waiting to anyone. Do it now! GIT 'UR DONE!!

Hi, I think you are doing a great job coming up with fun prompts to get us to share on the BL challenge. I am also very impressed with your success in losing weight--a great inspiration. Thanks.
