On January 1, 2009, my new year's resolution was "Healthy Body." My initial goal was to start cycling again and to be able to cycle between 30 and 35 miles in a day by early April. I met that goal by taking baby steps--adding one minute and one mile at a time. On the April bike trip I'd signed up for as motivation and reward, I rode an all-time personal best of 76 miles in one day! In June, my husband and I cycled from Pittsburgh to Washington DC on the GAP & C&O Canal Trails covering about 350 miles in nine days.

The last year taught me that strength and stamina are not primarily about age. I'm stronger and have more energy at 62 than I did twenty years ago. Sadly, I also weigh 50 lbs more than I did then. I've had success with Weight Watchers and the South Beach diet, losing weight quickly--but as soon as I'd go off the program, the weight crept back and I felt worse about myself-- more hopeless and ashamed--than I had before I'd started.

This year I will get into my healthy weight range AND STAY THERE. If I can ride 350 miles on my bike in just over a week and was able to increase my time in the saddle from five minutes a day to more than five hours in a day, surely I can do this. By this time next year I want to feel as proud of healthy eating habits as I am of my biking.

My Goals:
My goal is to get into my healthy weight range AND STAY THERE.

Additional Goals:

1) Follow my new SP eating program until May 1 (for three months/100 days) before I decide whether the approach is "working."

2) Establish healthy eating habits that are sustainable for the rest of my life.

3) Trust the process--track food and fitness daily, stay in target ranges on most elements most days, and trust that my weight will take care of itself.


My Program:
Keep calorie intake in recommended range by pacing myself. Target is to average no more than 100 calories per waking hour.

Ask for help from SP friends when I feel discouraged or want to give up.
