Getting slimmer

Growing up with brothers who called their sisters fat molded my self image as a fat person, even though I was actually not overweight when all that started.

Growing up with brothers who called their sisters fat molded my self image as a fat person, even though I was actually not overweight when all that started.

I've been overweight to different degrees most of my adult life. My maximum weight was 260 in 2007. Then I retired from teaching, and felt I could begin to focus on my health, and change my lifestyle. My husband and I joined the local YMCA and started working out. Armed with lots of nutrition knowledge, he changed the way he cooked. He constantly tries out new recipes from various health websites. Exercising and portion control were the two biggest changes. I also tracked my nutrition and fitness. By December of 2008 I was down to 189. I felt so good at that weight . My doctor had slowly weened me off of all my blood pressure medications, and my blood pressure has been normal with no meds since then.
Being satisfied I started sliding on tracking. After a while I forgot what portion sizes look like because I slowly quit measuring things. We were following the 80/20 rule but little by little that started sliding to 20/80. We never stopped eating good healthy food, but I was ad libbing a little here and there. Biggest problem is at work. We don't keep "junk" food in the house. But working in a drug store, there is danger lurking around every corner. Then the worst thing happened. I started skipping workouts. So I got back to 220. I knew I needed to track things again, and get back with the program. My husband found Sparkpeople, and a friend from work asked me to be her walking buddy. So here I am. Back on track. This time I am going to get my BMI in the healthy range and keep it there. Since I'm started off 40 pounds lighter than the last time, I know I can go all the way this time. So the pictures you see here are of me when I was in the healthy BMI range.

Other Information:
Retired teacher. Weighed 260 when I retired, 3 1/2 years ago. I'd already lost 63 pounds doing the same thing I am now, only using a different program that did not have all the motivational aspects that sparkpeople has. Now I want to go the rest of the way to my right BMI.

I see that you are a member of the SP Class of October 3-9, 2010 Team. I just became a team leader for this group. I started sparkpeople.com on the 3rd of October, 2010. I was wondering if you are still active on SP and if yes, can we be friends? I'd like to help you keep accountable. And of course, have your support as well. Have a SPARKly day!

May the light always find you on a dreary day.
When you need to be home, may you find your way.
May you always have courage to take a chance
And never find frogs in your underpants.

Happy St. Patricks Day!!!
