Hi I’m Stridefully!

I’m in my early thirties and have been overweight since the 4th grade. My entire family has been overweight since I was a child. I grew up in a household where soul food was served every night – collard greens, fried pork chops, fried okra, fried and smothered steaks, hog maws – you name it! Growing up my father who was also overweight used to always get on my 2 sisters and I case about being too fat and how unacceptable it was in society. So we would often as a family go on a diet. Then two weeks later my dad would order a pizza and there goes the “family diet”. This happened a lot growing up and I believe it has strongly affected me being committed to anything. I have tried many diets like Slim fast, Atkins, slimming teas (diarrhea tea), weightloss pills, and other fad diets. None of which worked.

Growing up I was the “fat girl” in school and got picked on a lot. I used to hate it in P.E. Class when we would play flag football or soccer and the captains had to pick the teams because I was often the last one standing. Whenever I tried to lose weight I never lost it for me. It was always done to be accepted or loved by my peers and family or to be “that” girl on the magazine.

Over the past few years at least half of my family has gotten in shape and to this day my parents still bug me about my weight. I know they love me dearly but it can get annoying hearing that every time I go home. I have since learned not to take it personally when they start talking about my weight.

In my 10th grade year of high school I lost about 50 lbs by eating loads of saltine crackers to keep me full and an occasional meal here and there. I ended up gaining the weight back within a year because I did it for all the wrong reasons on top of not eating well balanced meals. I lost the weight to get acceptance from my classmates and guys at school. Which was not a good reason.

In September of 2008 I became a vegetarian. This was a start. Shortly after I actually gained weight because I was always eating carbs and cheese pizza not the fruits and veggies I should’ve been eating. I am now starting this new healthy lifestyle for ME not for my parents, not for a man, not for acceptance, but for ME! I love myself now more than words can explain and even in my faults I’m still in LOVE with myself!


1st goal – Workout 3 times per week
2nd goal – Try a different workout everyday
