Where to start? I have always been heavier and really had never “dieted”. My heaviest was my senior year in high school: 198 pounds on a five foot and two inch frame, not good but everyone in my family is heavy. We are Midwestern German & Swiss stock that tends to be big-boned. Plus, I am a foodie that has always jested that I only run when chased.

Two years ago I read Michael Pollan’s In Defense of Food and it opened my eyes. I changed what I ate: reducing processed and fast foods, totally eliminating unnatural fats (like margarine). I lost twenty pounds eating butter in moderation, “real foods” that only my great-grandmother would recognize and making sure nothing that went in my mouth had high fructose corn syrup. I nauseated my friends and co-workers with the glory of Pollan’s research because it had worked. Problem was, that was all I changed and the weight slowly came back. In the mean time I met a wonderful man that thought I was beautiful despite my apple silhouette. The relationship buoyed my confidence and I did not think about my growing size.
Till this spring when I noticed my belly was touching the steering wheel of my car and I was not wearing my winter coat. I joined Curves on a free month trial, but I think I only went three times that month. I was convinced that my first love, food, was the enemy. I went on a few week challenge with a supplement company, followed the restrictions and barely lost any weight; after less than a month starving myself and hardly any results. Luckily, the supplement rep did not return my email when I asked her “What next?” I decided to actually give Curves a real try and within a week or so I decided to try Curves Complete. I had spent more money with the supplement company for less than a month’s assistance, so what would it hurt to spend less money at Curves for a whole twelve weeks of help? I could not stand the fact I had to suck it in to turn a corner when driving my car, my parents both have Type 2 diabetes and I was almost 38- I had to do something.
After twelve weeks I have lost a total of 14 pounds, 3.1% of my body fat and 11.25 inches but I have gained so much. I learned I can change my habits and I can lose more. During the last three months there were weeks I did not lose anything and weeks I gained; I got discouraged but the next week I would drop. I learned that I had gained tools and I could move forward closer to health. I began feeling smaller and had more energy. I had a flat butt and now it has a shape! I learned that exercise really does give you energy: half way through the circuit, on a day I barely dragged myself in, I would decide to stay and do Zumba for half an hour. I have noticed positive changes in my mood as well. I realized that smaller portions do not mean being hungry all the time.
