This statement, "Never give up, never surrender!" is to remind me that persistence is key to health and well being.

I joined this SparkPeople in 2005 to get a $150 insurance rebate from my then employer. I have since moved on to another job. I deleted my original corporate sponsored account and made my own personal identity as SPEEDYDOG. The support and the resources on this site are indispensable!

I am a 57 years old and have been blessed with a great wife and five wonderful kids. I live in a small town in the Colorado Rockies.

I played football in high school and college. I was an offensive tackle. I was not all that large (6’ – 265 lbs) so I relied on strength and quickness. I was also on the track team. I ran the 1/2 mile and threw the shot and discus. I also boxed and wrestled. Like a lot of ex-athletes I gained weight easily.

As the years went by, my weight steadily increased. My health starting going downhill. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure. My feet hurt all the time.

I lost weight on various plans but gained it all back. I was the typical yo-yo dieter. SparkPeople has helped me stabilize my weight. I have lost 60 pounds on SparkPeople. I am confident that I can reach my goals.

I am running again, I enjoy an occasional recreational race. I am having fun.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes:

"A lot of people run a race to see who's the fastest. I run to see who has the most guts."
Steve Prefontaine

“Never mistake activity for achievement.”
John Wooden

“Important principles may, and must, be inflexible.”
Abraham Lincoln

“Whatever you are, be a good one.”
Abraham Lincoln

“Winning isn't everything, but the will to win is everything.”
Vince Lombardi

"Run when you can, walk if you have to, crawl if you must; just never give up. "
Dean Karnazes

“No one has ever drowned in sweat.”
Lou Holtz

"The problem with having a sense of humor is often that people you use it on aren't in a very good mood."
Lou Holtz

“It ain't bragging if you can do it.”
Dizzy Dean

Hey Bruce,

Two of our three greyhounds are ex-racers. Gigi, the one who just had surgery, only raced in schooling races. They are the most precious creatures in the world!

Hi Bruce, Well, I guess I'll be treating the marathon as Half Ironman training. But I've been doing 2 marathons a year and wanted to do one again soon anyway. I may just run harder than a training run though. I know it's difficult for me to restrain myself once the race starts. Going to keep reminding myself that I need to save a lot for the Half Ironman, though. Sometimes I get too self confident and overdue things, I think you know about that! LOL. Keep up the good work, guys like you inspire me.
