This statement, "Never give up, never surrender!" is to remind me that persistence is key to health and well being.

I joined this SparkPeople in 2005 to get a $150 insurance rebate from my then employer. I have since moved on to another job. I deleted my original corporate sponsored account and made my own personal identity as SPEEDYDOG. The support and the resources on this site are indispensable!

I am a 57 years old and have been blessed with a great wife and five wonderful kids. I live in a small town in the Colorado Rockies.

I played football in high school and college. I was an offensive tackle. I was not all that large (6’ – 265 lbs) so I relied on strength and quickness. I was also on the track team. I ran the 1/2 mile and threw the shot and discus. I also boxed and wrestled. Like a lot of ex-athletes I gained weight easily.

As the years went by, my weight steadily increased. My health starting going downhill. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure. My feet hurt all the time.

I lost weight on various plans but gained it all back. I was the typical yo-yo dieter. SparkPeople has helped me stabilize my weight. I have lost 60 pounds on SparkPeople. I am confident that I can reach my goals.

I am running again, I enjoy an occasional recreational race. I am having fun.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes:

"A lot of people run a race to see who's the fastest. I run to see who has the most guts."
Steve Prefontaine

“Never mistake activity for achievement.”
John Wooden

“Important principles may, and must, be inflexible.”
Abraham Lincoln

“Whatever you are, be a good one.”
Abraham Lincoln

“Winning isn't everything, but the will to win is everything.”
Vince Lombardi

"Run when you can, walk if you have to, crawl if you must; just never give up. "
Dean Karnazes

“No one has ever drowned in sweat.”
Lou Holtz

"The problem with having a sense of humor is often that people you use it on aren't in a very good mood."
Lou Holtz

“It ain't bragging if you can do it.”
Dizzy Dean

It seems almost daily that they are putting in a new trail out behind our house! There are some great trails around Lake Tahoe as well, just 30 minutes from Reno. emoticon

Thanks for the blog comment!

I myself think I am a combo of Math and Word ... though not their good traits. No, no - I have the worst of both worlds!

I never text and drive or text and walk. And I actually talk to my dining companions rather than text. But it does come in handy to get in touch with people (especially young ones who don't talk on the phone). And the GPS navigation has gotten me places easier than looking at a map.

Lol! Yep we changed pretty much everything :) The bike will roll much smoother when we get the new hubs on it. I have Chris King on my summer bike and I've noticed that the stock ones on the Boris are so much slower.

We were out on the weekend in muddy conditions and it rode awesome. Traction on climbs wasn't an issue at all. Some friends were out on their regular bikes and they are talking about getting fatbikes now too.

Well happy riding this winter, have lots of fun!

Thanks for stopping by my blog, Bruce. Love your mountain home. It's beautiful and very 'Christmassy' with all the snow. We're having rain today. Around here that's an event :) Have a great day.
