This statement, "Never give up, never surrender!" is to remind me that persistence is key to health and well being.

I joined this SparkPeople in 2005 to get a $150 insurance rebate from my then employer. I have since moved on to another job. I deleted my original corporate sponsored account and made my own personal identity as SPEEDYDOG. The support and the resources on this site are indispensable!

I am a 57 years old and have been blessed with a great wife and five wonderful kids. I live in a small town in the Colorado Rockies.

I played football in high school and college. I was an offensive tackle. I was not all that large (6’ – 265 lbs) so I relied on strength and quickness. I was also on the track team. I ran the 1/2 mile and threw the shot and discus. I also boxed and wrestled. Like a lot of ex-athletes I gained weight easily.

As the years went by, my weight steadily increased. My health starting going downhill. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure. My feet hurt all the time.

I lost weight on various plans but gained it all back. I was the typical yo-yo dieter. SparkPeople has helped me stabilize my weight. I have lost 60 pounds on SparkPeople. I am confident that I can reach my goals.

I am running again, I enjoy an occasional recreational race. I am having fun.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes:

"A lot of people run a race to see who's the fastest. I run to see who has the most guts."
Steve Prefontaine

“Never mistake activity for achievement.”
John Wooden

“Important principles may, and must, be inflexible.”
Abraham Lincoln

“Whatever you are, be a good one.”
Abraham Lincoln

“Winning isn't everything, but the will to win is everything.”
Vince Lombardi

"Run when you can, walk if you have to, crawl if you must; just never give up. "
Dean Karnazes

“No one has ever drowned in sweat.”
Lou Holtz

"The problem with having a sense of humor is often that people you use it on aren't in a very good mood."
Lou Holtz

“It ain't bragging if you can do it.”
Dizzy Dean

Thanks, Bruce. That is quite an elaborate post :)
We, too, are upset about the mandated domestic water restrictions while it seems like every other day LADWP has a water main break, spilling precious water into the streets. Agricultural use is a hot topic as well. Though, driving through California's central valley a little while back it became apparent that despite their alleged huge water consumption they could clearly use more, as many of the fields lay fallow. Not much we can do but be mindful and hang in there. Have a great Sunday.

Dude! If you do start to Tri ... and get a new bike ... do NOT blame it on me hahaha. Your other half will track me down and wham on me for having put that idea into your head. Heh.

Seriously though ... I have found doing the multisport thing as addictive as just biking.

Now if I had seen a bee on a flower, I would have run away...not taken a picture ;-)

Thanks, Bruce. One of the best things about spark people is that I am connected to such tough athletes as yourself. Your nice words mean a lot to me.
I have found that I am able to do so much when I put competition on the back burner and just do these things for myself.
On the triathlon forums, the young guys scoff at those of us who do triathlons "to finish" and not to win. That's fine. Besides, not anyone I know cares how fast I am, or for that matter, they don't even know what 'fast' is. Those who know me love that I just DO them.
Thanks again, pal, I hope you are recovering well.
