I Think I Can

I joined Sparkpeople in order to have an easy way to be accountable to myself for achieving my fitness goals. My original specific goal was to finish the Jingle Bell 5k fun run in December, which I did.

Now my goals are to stick with my running, strength training, Pilates and spinning. I want to maintain my weight between 112 and 115 pounds, avoid injury and stay healthy.

My Goals:
My current goal is to improve my 5k time by 10 minutes.

My Program:
When I joined Spark People I had NEVER run before!! I started the Rookie Running Program in September 2011 and I finished it on November 15. WOOHOO!

As part of my training program I walked/ ran the Trick or Treat Virtual 5k Race and I was thrilled that I was able to finish it doing more running than walking.

I finished the 2011 Jingle Bell Run 5k and I actually ran the entire distance. I had never run more than 2 miles without walking before the race so that was a real thrill.

Since the race I have been working on improving my time and my endurance. I do sprint intervals on Monday and Wednesday and long slow distance runs on Saturday.

My current distance PR is 6.2 miles, which I did in a virtual 10k race in October.

My goal is to finish a 5k in under 40 minutes. I am planning to sign up for the Groundhog Jog 5k on February 2d so that will be my first chance to try for that PR in an actual race.

Thanks for commenting on my weight loss. Little by little I'm losing back what I gained in the hospital and before the stroke with my daughters'. I am determined!

Thanks so much for reading my blog and for your words! I am lucky I know. Sometimes it doesn't feel that way when I see how much I had to give up and start over. But then I see people in a wheelchair, or walker, or having really serious problems in other areas and Is ee how far I've come. I can drive and do better when sitting down. I can walk but can't do anything else, like look to the side, button my jacket, et at the same time or I'm all over the place and when looking around get dizzy. No where near running. And I have to stop and rest frequently on those walks LOL. But I still have come to far in spite of those and some other problems. Gradually some of those are getting better. I'm right handed but it still shakes some, and I have had to learn to eat with my left had or I spill it everywhere. Not great with left hand either! But I can't write with my left hand. Typing I make a lot of mistakes especially on the right side. Thank goodness for backspace ha ha. But when I have to actually write it is a slow and painful process still. But clearer than when I was in the hospital. Hopefully most or all will come back in time. Not quite 5 months since the stroke so I guess I'm actually doing pretty well! Course I had to take a driving test but thankfully I passed! Yeah!

Thank you so much for reading my blog and commenting. I agree with you so much. I probably wouldn't have survived out hiking for days, because they tell me I almost died that day. If I hadn't had help right away I probably would not have made it. And what is worse is that it could have happened a couple of hours earlier when I was out walking or just half an hour earlier when I was driving the grandkids to school. And half an hour or an hour later I'd have been on a major freeway or further down on I-10 driving at a high rate of speed when I got so incredibly dizzy so fast. Even though my grown daughter would have been with me, it would have been really hard to get off the road. So much could have happened but it happened at the right moment. And the doctor at the rural hospital working that day just happened to know what the drs were doing in Phoenix at St. Joseph's hospital and got me transferred by noon that day. We have some bad dr's in the ER in SIlver City but that day happened to be one who knew what to do in this situation. That's just the tip of the iceberg. So much worked together for me and I have to remember that! By the way, I don't find much money over here in Ft. Worth but did find 4 cents at the car wash today LOL.

Some things, like walking, are somewhat better. Over all I'm recovering better than a lot of people but still far to go. I'm in Fort Worth now with my son and going to rehab 3 hour m - f. My right hand still shakes a lot and I backspace frequently in every message but love to get on. Over here I've found one lousy penny on two separate times. I think there is a little genie that cleans the coins at night here. Definitely not as good as when I was in southern New Mexico. Still look for those coins though.
